I have to test a TA 300 ACDC tonight.  Can I use a stick in the stinger to check the TIG mode of the machine?  Would that cause any damage to it?I'm figuring on testing it in Stick mode first, then putting the pedal on and seeing if the HF works from a stick.  Also, tossing some 6013 in it, and seeing if it will stick weld in tig mode and I can vary the amps with the pedal while running a bead in AC and DC mode.  Should I just spend the extra time hooking up a tig torch?TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:I'm pretty sure you can test the high frequency circuits by leaving the ground clamp off the work, pump the pedal and listen for the HF stuff to go off.  (just don't ask me how I discovered this scientific test, okay?)Without a real hookup, how do you know the argon solenoid works, and that there are no leaks in the gas system?Good luck with it...
Reply:I would definitely set up the all the tig gear, and make sure it tig welds right. Make sure to check the high freq. start function, and be sure to run in wide open to make sure it's got full power.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:I'd start out with a 3/16" electrode clamped between the rod holder and the ground. Machine set to max with the foot control hooked up. Gradually increase the amps (via foot pedal) and watch the rod heat up. Continue to bring up the amps until the rod melts in half.Check all your connections for over heating. Then turn things down and go into your TIG testing with a machine and accessories that are "warmed up"......If it passes the first test, your off to a good start.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
