Finally starting to mig, i wanna get a hang of it then get certified by next year. Well i laid my first 10 beads, im using fluxcore since i havent bought gas yet1. first bead i stuck my tip into the pool and its gone 2. got alot of spatter on the tip so the wire would jam alot 3. did a push that had a low crown with pin holes- i cranked up the wire speed 4. tried a pull- looked iffy until i ran a wire on it for a sec to see it and i had some dimes 5. pull again- actually prepped first. alot better 6. push again- had more penetration but i have to go alot slower to fill 7. actually started focusing on the puddle 8. learned how to manipulate it 9. still trying 10. i got what i would consider a perfect looking weld for a begginer. i say "look" because i did it on 1/4" and have no idea if im getting enough penetration All in all i did pretty good when i stopped getting wire fuse to my tip. it got so bad that i had to fix it every 1". now that i stopped doing it im progressing my the bead. i just wanted to tell someone because no one i know cares. but they dont have the fabrication bug i got. thanks for reaading. Reply:What brand welder do you have? Lincoln and Miller come with manuals or a CD that tell you about wire stick out from the tip, for proper distance from the work piece.Sounds like you have the understanding of what is to be done by your progress statement. How ever...... more information is need. Such as work piece thickness welder settings etc etc.And pictures do speak thousands of words. Keep practicing and you will get there.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:i have a lincoln180, it has in the welder a chart for speed and heat. i started there and adjusted from that. learned to keep my 3/8" spacing from tip to bead. also learned to lighten up my hood. all i need now is to keep practice on puddle flow. my dimes were to tight and could use a little more space. ill post pics tomorrow, but with a black berry so pics will not be to goodExotic Car FabricationsLincoln 180HD 75/25
Reply:Work on your penetration first, as dimes are nice looking and with mig and little experience can be just that good looking and no penetration. I get penetration on a test piece (speed and heat) in the first inch of weld, not the first weld on a test piece mind you. But then I also know my puddle width height and so on and so on, so when I start on the actual work piece it's a lot easier / more comfortable to progress.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:the hardest part is doing it on the floor. i wont know penetration until i find some thinner steel. if im not getting enough penetration what do i do. because on this 1/4" i was at max heat and 8 speedExotic Car FabricationsLincoln 180HD 75/25
Reply:You can know the penetration by cutting the piece thru a weld, or starting the weld at the edge of the piece. Weld other pieces to the 1/4" so you can also see the penetration. As for the floor..... man be careful and not have your head directly over the welding area while welding. And a fan for exhaust (even a 3 speed box fan) pulling the fumes away from you will help and not harm the weld pool.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
