What size tungsten should a new tigger start out with? What size do most all you pros usually use? Thanks Harold
Reply:That will depend on what you are welding. The thickness of the material. The current that you will be using.http://www.millerwelds.com/resources...rticles83.htmlhttp://www.thefabricator.com/Aluminu...cle.cfm?ID=527Here are a couple of links to help. The second link has a size comparison chart. For me; I use 3/32 and 1/8 for all my manual pipe welding. (sch 40 and sch 80)For sch 5 and sch 10 I use 3/32.I use 1/16 for thinner metals= sheet metalI have used 5/32 tungsten with machine (mechanized) welding possibly 3/16 for hi deposition welding but not 100% sure on that last one.Last edited by swsweld; 09-10-2009 at 10:19 PM.Reason: additional information
Reply:Size goes with ampsmore amps = bigger tungsten.3/32" is a good place to start on steel 1/8" and up. it will probably work on some smaller material also.thicker material is easier to learn on (not so heat sensitive)G
Reply:I agree, 3/32" is the place to start. If you need a really small puddle, sharpen the tip very narrow, and if you need a bigger arc, take the grind much shorter. I can usually weld from 1/16" up to 5/16" steel with 3/32, no problem. And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return. |
