Jeep Grand Cherokee sheetmetel bumper

Apparently, I suck at driving. Slid into a tree Thanksgiving morning and took out my rear bumper. Rather than be a candyass and buy a new one I decided I should build one instead. I didn't take very many pictures along the way because I was in a hurry. Slapped this together in the shop after work over the last couple weeks.Almost completely welded out. I love cranes!And the(never) finished product. The skin is built out of 10g hot rolled sheet cut out on a Torchmate 7x14 cnc plasma table  All mig welded. I should have taken pictures... but...i didnt... there is a 2x2x.25 tubing structure under there that I welded to the existing hitch mount. It has a provision for mounting a spare tire carrier I've yet to fabricate. I should probably build a front bumper now Last edited by i4sillypwr; 12-25-2010 at 09:18 PM.

Reply:You can't mount spare tire carriers or shackles on a rubber bumper :P Someday, I'll get motivated enough to finish the rear, the front, lift it 4in and buy 33s.

It's two L shaped pieces that come off either side of the hitch mount up to the top rear edge of the bumper skin. Then there is a 44in tube that runs the length of the bumper to support it. The drivers side has an extension that goes right up into the outermost corner of the bumper. The tire carrier pivot point will bolt through the skin into the tubing support. If/when I put the D rings on there I will tie the 44in tube into the ends of the rail portion of the unibody via bolts. Pretty sure I could pick it with a crane and hang it from its *** end with this design.edit: I left enough room between two L pieces coming off the hitch that I could mount a winch plate back there. I have an idea for a quick release mount so I can just swap a winch from front to back fairly quickly. Gotta make provisions for those modifications you know you will do down the road haha.
