Which is a better stickwelder? The Hobart Stickmate model 500502:http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...4603_200304603Or the Lincoln AC-225:http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?actio...esc&lpage=noneI am a newbie and they are both the same price $269.  I was wondering if any can help me decide which one is better. Thanks Before Hand,Adiel
Reply:Hi and welcome to the forum!  First off let me say my answer will be biased since I tend to favor the Lincoln brand of equipment.  That being said, I have no experience with Hobart machines, only the Miller Thunderbolt similar to the Hobart stickmate.  The Miller was okay with nothing to brag about.  I learned on the Lincoln 225ac years ago.  We still have the machine my dad bought some 35-40 yrs ago and it still smokes rods consistently!  Although, at one period of time, Lincoln did put out some not so good 225ac units with poor welding and operating characteristics due to trying to cut costs on material quality.  I think those problems have since been resolved.  So, if it were my money, I would buy the Lincoln.  But, since its your money, the decision is yours.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:An AC only machine is OK, if that's all you can afford.  I learned how to weld on a Lincoln AC 225 over 30 years ago.  Once you weld with DC though, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.   DC is particularly nice for welding out of position, ie. vertical, overhead, etc.  Anyway, I would recommend trying to find an AC/DC machine that fits your budget.  I've seen the Lincoln AC/DC 225's on craigslist for less than 200 bucks.Work HARDER, not smarter! ------------------------ Miller Bobcat 250Millermatic 251Lincoln Precision TIG 185Hypertherm PM 600Hobart 135 HandlerOxweld 400 FlameMaster
Reply:Thanks guys I will take your advice.   Which AC/DC stick welder would you recommend for a beginner? I am not looking to weld anything thicker than around 3/8 inch.  Also, I would only use the machine on weekends for projects, not as an everyday machine. Thanks Again,Adiel
Reply:Again, being a Lincoln brand advocate, I say go with Lincoln 225ac/dc.  Of course the Miller and Hobart guys will understandably disagree.  But which ever brand you decide on should do you good.  If your not shy of buying a good used machine at a good price, check on Ebay or Craig's list.  Good luck and practice, practice, practice.A few of my toys !LinuxMintManjaroMiller Roughneck 2E Lincoln WeldPak 100HTP MTS 160 Chicago Electric 80amp Inverter   Victor O/A
Reply:Adiel,Welcome to the forum.  I'm a newbie also, but I had that same decision to make a few months ago, and went with the Hobart Stickmate LX 235AC/160DC.  My short experience with an AC only unit,  sold me on continuing my learning process with an AC/DC unit.  Lincoln 225's are comparable but don't have the infinite amp setting capability that a Stickmate or Miller Thunderbolt has.  I would take the above advice and hold out for an AC/DC unit.  I just saw a Miller thunderbolt AC/DC on Craigslist Atlanta for $150. Keep looking, you'll find something.   Just my opinion...........Nctox,  Stickmate LX  235AC/160DC  HH210
Reply:I agree, go for the DC output machine.  I'm mostly Blue, so I would tend choose the Thunderbolt XL, but any of them will do ok.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks Everyone.   Yes, I did notice the DC amps on the Lincoln k1297 to be 125 amps.  However the Miller and Hobart both have higher DC amps(150-160).  It looks like it is down to either a Miller Thunderbolt XL or a Hobart 500421.  I will just check around and whichever of those two units I find cheaper, I will go with.  Thanks,Adiel
Reply:I went with the Miller Thunderbolt XL.  I got a brand new one locally for $515 at a welding supply dealer.  I cant wait to use it.
