Car Trailer Rebuild

This is my first projects thread. I will have pictures in a few days.  I purchased a 16' 7K car trailer.  New wood deck,  new ramps, good lighting, 2k winch, new jack  for 1200 and it was close to my location.  It is a well built trailer not one of those flimsy ones.  I have had it for 10 days.  Has had 3 vehicles and one tractor on it.  I scored a great deal on ebay for 2 new 6k axles and 2 used axles with brakes, 4 rims with E rated tires for $400. I am going to purchase 7k springs.   I have done my research on this.  Many manufactures are selling 5x3 angle trailers that are 16' with a 4' dove tail and rated at 12kI am going to move the spring perches back to the 60/40 ratio  that will make a 19' trailer that will move the spring hangers back one full spring length.  Will only have to weld on one set of of hangers.     I am not going going to be doing the welding, just the fitting and tacking.  The person doing doing the  welding is a certified welder.  more to come....Carlohttp://public.fotki.com/Naudi2U/
Reply:There's a big difference between a trailer engineered to hold a certain load, and redesigning an existing trailer to carry a heavier load, let alone adding to the length at the same time. There's quite a bit more to it than just slapping a new set of heavier axles under it and tossing on some added steel to make it longer. My guess is the whole trailer will need to get torn apart and completely rebuilt tongue to tail to handle the extra loads properly. Probably cost a lot more than just buying one designed to carry the load in the 1st place. I hope whoever redesigned this knows what they are doing as well as whoever is doing the welding and fab work.Also keep in mind that in many states as soon as the registered gross weight of the trailer tops 10,000 lbs, you will need a class A license to tow it, even empty. That usually means you need to meet all the same requirements as you would if you were driving a big rig with the exception of the air brake endorsement. You might look at a few of the replies to this thread near the end where it talks about trailers and weight. Broccoli1 found out that regardless what you THINK the regs might say, the state may have a different interpretation and getting the straight answer isn't always easy. Reply:Nice trailer. Never understood why there is only 1 trailer jack on something that large? Maybe in the middle of the reach but not on 1 side? I recently did a 20' cargo trailer and put two jacks on. Way more stability and little to no frame flex as well. looks good... Dont take too much weight off the front or you will feel your truck hopping,.... too much weight and bad things could happen.
