Only welded probably 10 days so try to go easy on me.  I believe its 1/8" pipe.  Running a 1/8" 6013 rod at between 90-110 amps tried to adjust some when i blew through it.  Machine is a Maxstar 150-SThis is the only metal I have on hand, that isn't attached to the barn.  Got this welder this afternoon and welded on this pipe for 20 minutes.  Had a Miller 225AC before and used it for some minor repairs on the barn but nothing was pretty about any of it.I'm all ears...
Reply:1) Need to grind clean the metal.2) Looks like you're running too long an arc (excess spatter, poor bead profile)3) Inconsistant travel speed (appears too fast most of the time)MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:What Duane said. And with E6013, keep the arc gap at virtually ZERO. Keep pushing that rod tip right down on the surface and at a right angle. I can say we have seen worse, (prolly done worse to be honest). It takes time, keep working at it. City of L.A. Reply:Completely Agree with others..Clean, clean  and clean always/every weld, as it is the basis of your foundation !! just hit it with the grinder for a few minutes...welding is like painting a car, prep is the first and most important key.and take it a little slower..... And,  I 've seen a hell of alot worst...
Reply:It's pretty tough to find something when you don't know what you're looking for.  Have someone that stick welds come over to hold your hand, while you weld.  It is amazing how fast one can pick up stick when a teacher stands behind you, holding your glove and guiding your hand, while you hold the rod clamp.  Practice on thicker material, so you don't fear punching through.Last edited by Weldordie; 01-03-2011 at 01:04 AM.
Reply:Agree w/ the others and get some flap discs. They work better for removing rust from 1/8" w/o removing too much metal. It'll come to ya, just takes practice.                                             MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I would say you where running a little too hot. Turn it down a little and move slower and more controlled form the puddle and keep it nice and uniform. Notice where he blew through a couple times. I am sure he was trying to go faster to try and stop blowing through on the hotter setting.
Reply:What size rod should I run with metal this thin, yes I did keep having to speed up to not burn through but arc length could have been the bigger issue than my speed.  I will try and run some more beads this evening.  The only other rods I have on hand are 1/16" 6013 and 3/32 6011. Greatly appreaciated, my only welding contact is 100 miles away so having to figure most of it out online.
Reply:You'll get a smoother arc by running DC electrodes instead of the AC ones that you're currently using. That'll make it easier for you to lay down some good beads... Good luck and keep us posted. As has been previously stated, practice practice practice... then practice some more!
