I have an opportunity to pick up a 3/8" 4'x4' sheet of steel for $50. Wondering if I'll be able to weld a frame to it with the Diversion 180. My other option could be to toss it on top of some saw horses, but don't know if want to risk 200lbs of steel falling off them...Any advice?
Reply:yer fineYou don't want to fully weld the top to the base anyway as that much heat can cause the top to warp.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:I tigged a 1/4" top to 2x2x.125" square tube for my work cart. I just stiched it 2" every 12" longways, and the middle of each support short side. You don't want to run full pen welds just to hold the top on. Just enough to take a bit of pounding and some weight.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
Reply:Do people normally have a 4'x4' 3/8" steel plate at their apartment? I plan on meeting someone about an hour away to pick it up, but when I say the address I started to question if it was. Or, if he is selling me something that is not his, just happens to be there...... just seems odd.
Reply:Normal people don't but I did.You get what you put in and people get what they deserve...
Reply:Here it is... I sanded majority of the rust off.About to hit up harbor freight... don't know if I should get a sandblaster or sand it more... I have a 1 1/2 HP emglo hooked up to a 15 gallon tank, so about 19 gallons total. Also a 10 gallon harbor freight compressor. Don't know if either of those will handle the air requirements for a sandblaster. Attached Images
Reply:you can sandblast in short bursts. Just don't work the compressor too hard and smoke it.
Reply:It depends on the CFM of the compressor for the required PSI of the blaster. I picked up the small 25 lb HF blaser and the dead man valve. still have yet to hook it up to the compressor and use it though. soon very soon. anyway, My 26 gal 1.5hp compressor will barrely have enough umph to use it. Just FYI.There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Picked up the HF 20 lb blaster. See soon how well it works. Thanks for the info.!
Reply:I may get flamed for this, but you can wipe it with muriatic acid. It will get the remainder of the rust off. Then rinse, hit with baking soda and water to neutralize. Then rinse again, het up slightly w torch and oil. The above worked on a 3/8" steel plate I used before I got my current table. 1 yr later and the plate still looks perfect.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
