So,I've been hearing a lot about this great shortage of welders in the Port of Catoosa, OK area and am thinking about getting down there to check it out. Just wondering if anyone on this forum has had any experience down there or has any knowledge if the opportunities down there are worth looking at.I'm not a pipeliner and its obvious that that is one of the skill sets they're looking for but I'm hearing about a lot of structural welding openings and that's primarily what I'm interested in.As always, thanks for the help.EricAWS D1.1 Certified SMAW 3G Unlimited, Open Root FCAW-G 3G Unlimited, w/BackerCellular Tower Reinforcement Welding on the frozen tundra of the greater Mid-West
Reply:Nope never heard of it. I have heard though of some Puta in Puerto Rico .
Reply:It's over by Claremore, and I haven't heard of anything out of the usual going on there.Catoosa is an inland waterway port that connects the state with the Gulf. Interesting place.Another thing to think about...........Oklahoma is chock full of welders what with the oil industry being a big thing here. You can't step off a sidewalk without stepping on the toes of a welder around here Tulsa Pipefitters Local is know for supplying welders for pipelines around the country and sometimes the world. Not saying they're the best, just there are a bunch of them."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Well, what do you want to know? Yes, they are hiring!! And just about always too! They have all kinds of jobs around there, lots of manufacturing companies. From pipe spools, pressure vessels, building skids, pre fab pipe line runs, structural, you name it. Tig, sub-arc, mig/flux, stick, gouging, etc. They have it all and need it all. So does Tulsa. EVERY weld shop has now hiring signs and can't find quality help. Tulsa to me, and i might be a bit biased, is kind of the welding epicenter, of the US at least. Yes, the tulsa pipe fitters are very proud and well known folk. "The port" is always hiring and the same people come and go when the pay goes up around there. Right now, if you're pretty good, i'd say you could land a job any where from 22-30/hr in a shop. Pretty good pay considering an average house is only 80K! There are tons of welders in oklahoma, and tons of people who have welders and call themselves welders. All the places near the port of catoosa seem to bring in people and work them till there sick of it or get laid off due to no work. It goes in spurts, super busy hiring, then nothing and lots get laid off. I dont want to say they are all sweat shops, but you work nasty dirty for long hours. If you need work and dont mind temporary or long term relocation, its not a bad thing to look into. Hell, the place i'm working at has been looking for a FULL time welder (bennies, pension, 401k, etc) for a year now, and cant find someone qualified to do it. Though we aren't paying near the 30 that you can get at some places. HOpe that helped some, Doug!Lincoln Idealarc Tig 300/300, Lincoln ranger 8, Lincoln LN-25, Miller Sidekick (keeps rockin!), Oxy/Acy torch, Miller XMT-304 with a Miller 60 series wire feeder and high freq. box, Profax positioner 8" chuck, Aaronson 3500# positioner 15" chuck
