What's better about two-stage Oxy/Acetylene Regulators?

I've never used two-stage regulators, and am wondering what I have to gain by getting a set?(I'd find and rebuild a couple of used Victors and doing that safely is no obstacle) so the experiment would be cheap.)Those who prefer two-stage regulators, what do you like about them?
Reply:Two stage regs are often used when large volumes are required. Stepping the gas down in 2 stages rather than all at once helps prevent regs from freezing up. Also you get less variation in a 2 stage reg. As you tank pressure drops in a single stage reg the reg has to continually adjust the output to remain the same. This can cause small changes in pressure at the output. On a 2 stage reg the intermediate pressure is set at say 175psi, that means that the last stage is always seeing 175 psi +- a few psi and then regulating that down to outlet pressure.Not the best explanation in the world but it covers some of it..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Two stage regulators should only be used when the delivery pressure of the regulator can not change due to the application.  As a full cylinder of gas at 2400psi is used, the delivery pressure will climb as the cylinder empties.  The amount of climb depends on the make and model of regulator.  Two stage regulator have two regulator in one which means double the seats, diaphragms which double the chance of a failure.  As a rule they will delivery less gas than the same size single stage regulator.  There is obsolutely no reason to spend the extra money for a two stage regulator for a protable cutting & welding torch.Hope this helps!jimOAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
