Hi, I'm just curious about what size electrode is typically used for downhand root, fill and cap for pipe?6010 5p+... let's say the fit up had a 1/8 face and 1/8 gap1/8? 5/32? For root?3/16 fill and cap?Thank you in advance for any informationMuch appreciated

Reply:It will depend on the diameter of your pipe.Lincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:I'll show my knowledge of pipe.....aren't fill and cap passes typically done in 7018?
Reply:Not in downhand, usually uphill only with 7018

Reply:What determines whether you use up hand or down hand?
Reply:The type of rod you use determines whether you travel uphill or downhill. For example, 6010/6011 is a downhill rod and 7018 is an uphill rod. The weld of the 7018 rod will be highly compromised by flux when used downhill. As for your original question. I usually root with 1/8 rod and then cap with either a 1/8 or 5/32 7018 LH. When welding uphill, the bigger 7018 rods require more control as the puddle is bigger. Thicker pipe will require much more fill and might warrant using a bigger rod.Matthew MortonTexas A&M '06Logsdon Seminary '13"Who Dares Wins""AFTF""WH2PH"SA 200 (Code: 5337)TB 302CP 302 w/22A Wire FeederMillerMatic 200Miller Syncrowave 200MillerMatic 252BurnTables 4x4 CNC MachineHypertherm 65
Reply:5/32 6010 downhand at 80 amps with my technique dosnt turn out very nice at all on a 4" pipe, for the cap, havnt tried root with 5/32 downhand just yetMore practice needed,, gonna keep turning down the amps to see what happens

Reply:Try, I've copy/pasted the settings you've mentioned to tryAny chance you can ask your friend what he uses for cap, rod size, amps,, technique maybe? Of course everyone is different but a starting point to fine tune is niceThanks again
Reply:depending on pipe diameter i know he generally uses 3/16, 7010-8010
Reply:as hobo said, depends on diameter and wall thickness. for 4" standard wall pipe, root with 1/8 start around 80 amps and notice how your tacks go in and adjust from there. Amps will also very on fit-up. Try nickel land and nickel gap, keep things simple at first and change one variable at a time until you get something that works for you, not someone else. Hotpass with 1/8 and cap with 1/8 also, you could do it all with 5/32, but if you are just learning, you will probably quit before you get it. Heck, start with 3/32, gap and land will be smaller of course but it will be easier to control (and watch and learn). With 3/32 start your amps around 60 and go from there. And these amp numbers are for CC machine.Lincoln Vantage 300Lincoln Ranger 8Lincoln LN-25Lincoln MiniflexMiller CST 280MillerMatic 180Hypertherm Powermax 45ESAB 161LTS |
