looking to fab up a jib crane on the out side of my garage to put my sa 200 in the back of my truck or on the trailer etc,i am going to be lagging it down to the trusses that are only 2x4, was going to get 2 pieces of i beam and use u bolts to attach to the bottom of the trusses, the trusses are spaced out 3 feet, the whole stucture of the jib will be inside,  and the pole will go on the outside  does any  one have any suggestions or similar projects
Reply:build you an A frame on wheels that lock put your i-beam at the top with a chain hoist to lift with that will roll back and forth just in case you are not centered my bud has one and it handled my sa 200 great next time i get over there i will post some picssa200 mo heat mo rod mo money
Reply:Take care; a truss is engineered to withstand a given load applied in a specific way. Loading the truss the wrong way, point load, making holes and you’ll have the whole thing down on your head. 2x4 may be too light depending on the span and web placement. The least material for the most strength makes a truss efficient.  http://www.sbcindustry.com/images/pu...ct%20sheet.pdfhttp://www.maplevalleytruss.com/config.htmhttp://www.truswood.com/roof%20trusses.htmLast edited by transit; 03-08-2010 at 08:28 PM.

Reply:why not mount it to the concrete or auger a hole and mount it.Millermatic DVIMillermatic 251Older buzz box Cheap 120 welder
Reply:i think that cementing it in is the way to go, or a gantry crane!
Reply:Gib crane is one of the most dangerous things on the planet if not properly built. The stress on the mast is incredible due to the cantilevered design.Like others said, an A frame thing would be best.  Simpler to design for the forces, just a beam and adequate supports."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Samm is right. Get on a crane manufacturer's website like Budget and look at the size of the masts and what they are rated to handle.
Reply:Would you be able to use an engine hoist?  That sounds a little cheaper/smaller/easier than a big A frame, at least for lifting into a trailer.  You can get a 2 ton model for $230 from Northern Tool that will lift over 7 feet.  Does the SA 200 weigh around a ton?But you might need a high lift model to hoist it into your truck: the $900 model will lift a little over 8 feet.  Anything heavier or taller than that, and you're looking at some real $$$$.  I saw a really nice engine crane for $5000, but that's a little rich for my blood.  - StixHobart Stickmate LXMakita 14" gas chopsawA whole mess of chainsaws
Reply:I agree go the prebought route and look for an engine lift, or gantry crane. I'm thinking of buying a portable gantry crane in my garage for this very purpose.we install a few jib cfranes at my work but we do the engineering calculations and bolt into steel girdersLast edited by Metarinka; 03-10-2010 at 02:15 PM.
Reply:engine hoist is no good the truck bed is to high and the sa 200 is probably 3 foot tall itself also i believe i am going to build a gantry crane they are ripping up alot of railroad tracks i think that should be strong enough, and cheap tooi have it on a trailer right now but the trailer rides like crap so i might rebuild it or put it on another trailer i have? i would just like to have the capabilities of throwing it on my truck at my home
Reply:It is kind of a pain to set up, but at home I just use a regular cherry picker on cement blocks (for extra height.)I lay a couple of blocks down, make two rows the width of the casters on the picker. Then I lay wide boards on the blocks and finally scootch the picker on top. This works ok for the sa-200.  For my SAE-300 I build an a- frame out of wood. Looks like a swing-set but made out of 4x4's(legs) 2x4's(brace and gussets and two 2x10's laminated together for the overhead. Chain hoist it up and then I drive out from under it, then lower it down on a small trailer so I can move it around. Then I dissasemble the wood and keep it seperate in the barn. Not as good as many other ways, but it is cheap and only takes about 20 mins to put together.  And my wife doesn't have to look at it when it's not in use.2011 Dodge 3500 diesel duallyLincoln SA-200Lincoln SAE-300LN-25'sLincoln Idealarc R3RMiller Trailblazer 302
