Hey fella's, I'm using a lincoln 180 230 volt machine that works great for metal. I bought a spool gun and been messing around with it on aluminum. On light aluminum of course it burns or blows thru (need tig for those projects) but on medium thickness stuff i cant seem to get a clean weld or a "penetrating" weld, I have a pretty good angle and "pushing" and making sure to keep the tip in the weld pool but if i bend a piece at the weld it usually pops loose. One issue i know i have (but not sure if thats all my issues) is I'm running 75/25, I hope thats my issues and I'm not just a total noob DumbAZZ which is probably my problem, lol. I want make some brackets and odd pieces etc.. light work nothing to major and would love a tig welder (looking at a miller diversion) Thxs again fella's. Regards, paul

Reply:it makes that much of a difference in weld quality/penetration? I mean i would think the weld might be more dirty looking but thot the weld would still be decent. My settup the weld looks ball-y and just not enuf penetration. thxs for the look I'll head to the weld shop and get 100% argon tomorrow. paul

Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloIt makes ALL the difference. The Co2 is the problem; you need full inert shielding, clean gas. The other mixed option for better penetration is argon/ helium mix. Takes 2 bottles, a mixer, and adapter. Not cheap at all.Argon.......
Reply:once you have the right gas try swapping the polarityDynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools

Reply:I have the same setup use 100% argon and you'll need to move faster almost 2x the speed of metal and youl'll be alright.
Reply:you guys where right (as if i doubted) I got a tank of pure argon today and the welds are penetrating well and pretty good looking appearance wise. I am just shocked that the 25% co2 makes that big a difference. I wonder why? does The co2 cool it down too fast or just let to much 02 in or something along those lines? Maybe its just PFM, Pure-FN-Magic, lolWOW,,,,,now i am much happier knowing i can use my mig for aluminum stuff and because i wont do much really top quality welding (just screwing around around the house) a tig will wait for now. Thxs again for all the responses,,,,,,the experience sure does show. Each pass i get just a little better and better. Be safe, paul
