Im tired of patching holes in a 60+ year old wood stove.  Ive decided to make a new one for the shop.   I want to keep the same style but the question is how thick of metal to use and what is the best grade of steel.   the current metal (WAS) .125 cold rolled.   its been burned thru in a few spots now its cracking all over  The only problem is we use recycled oil as a octane boost  to the wood to heat the 60 X 80 ft shop.   So it burns a little hotter than normal.   The average temp reading on the chimney thermometer is 700 to 900 deg.  Im guessing at the base of the fire its well over 1000 deg.    Heres some pics to help u understand.  The big barrel hols the used oil.   Air pressure pumps the oil into the 5 gallon bucket then then when needed add a blast of oil to even wet wood and you have fire.   Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:One of the newer hands just finished a pellet stove type of wood heater.  Might poke around an have a look see if you can find it.  It was well designed and assembled extremely well.  He showed the build in stages and really explained all his whats and whys to make sure it worked properly.  Very complete build.BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?
Reply:Im very interested to see what he did.   Heres another pic of the stove Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:how much used oil do you have you may want to check into a babington style oil burner and ditch the wood all together

Reply:Looking for a few more designs before i start building.    Love what I have seen so far.    Wanted to see if anyone else has had luck building a LARGE wood stove. mine is about 5'5" tall.   it will take a lot of wood to fillI need to heat a 60' wide 80' long and 25' + ceiling shop.  (havent measured the height to be exact but its up there) Attached Images“I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair
Reply:the one i based mine off of was two 30 inch pipes. the guy that showed it to me said it heated a mechanics shop no problem. The one I built was 20 inch lower and 12 inch upper, so 30 inch on both is a pretty huge difference.
Reply:I KNOW this is not a suggestion on how to build one but may be a viable alernative - Craigslist!I purchased a Glacier Bay wood stove off of Craigslist for my shop last August and paid only $100.  The stove will take 20" long pieces of firewood, is double-walled (minimum 3" clearance from flamable material) and has a blower that circulates air between the inner and outer walls and into the shop.  While my shop is only 40' x 40' with a 9' ceiling, and doesn't have the best insulation, this stove will more than adequately heat my shop.  This is a substantial stove - mostly cast iron with firebrick lining the fire box, takes 8" chimney pipe and has integral dampers in both doors.  It also weight about 500 lbs.Check out craigslist - there are lots for sale cheap! Here's a photo:
