My LWS has these hinges for $4 a piece. They also have a smaller and larger version. Has any body used them? Dont know what to make with them yet. Attached Images
Reply:What size are those? I have seen those. Always wondered how to align and balance them on that tab. They seem convenient. I usually stock a cheap barrel hinge and weld them to channel for the stand off. I purchased an Aluminum version of those and was shocked at how small they were for the rated capacity. I couldn't weld them with a spool gun without burning them up. I ended up machining my own.
Reply:Check McMaster Carr's catalog for barrel hinges. You should be able to find one close in size in their catalog and you'll have an idea what they're rated for. They work well. Don't pour too much heat into them all at once.I've seen them with zerk fittings on the female side so you can grease them if you permanently install them.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:They are good light duty hinges but you need to make sure that the distance from center of pivot to the welded edge is at least as much as half your gate frame material. If not, your gate won't open to 90 degrees.
Reply:Thanks everybody for the input. These are 5/8 diameter and about 8 inch long total. The Zerk is a good idea and its good to know about the standoff being at least the width of the door. |
