O.K here's the situation, imagine a square checkered plate about 48'' X 48'' X 1/4 thick, nothing is welded or drilled on the plate, its just a normal plate without anything on it,the plate go at the hot dipped galvanised and 1 week later the plate came back all cruved and bent, peoples at my shop told me ''its always the same probleme with galvanised plate and there's no solution''My main probleme is this line ''there's no solution'' im pretty sure someone can do it the right way, is there any treatement that we can do on the plate before shipping it to the galvanised shop to avoid this bending ?Last edited by LayoutMan; 11-14-2012 at 07:04 PM.Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:The problem is 1/4" plate will twist when it goes into the molten zinc at the Galvanisers. The only way you can try and stop it would be to make the Plates slightly oversized and tack a frame made up of 2"angle, Hopefully that should stop it bending a bit and then when you get it back from the galv you just need to cut it the right size. You'll need to spray the edges with Cold galv spray. If you don't fancy all that, have you thought about getting it Zinc Plated at the elctroplaters? Thers no High heat involved with electroplating and you shouldn't get any distortion
Reply:they are right. The heat will warp the hell out 1/4" other than fabricating and assembling it into the finish product Prior to galvanizing theres nothing you can do.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I'll admit I am no expert on hot dip galvanizing. My thought is whether the steel is pre-heated before it is dipped or if it is dipped cold. If steel is cold when dipped in the hot zinc could pre-heating help prevent the warping?"The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25

Reply:Hi, what's the advantage between hot dip and electroplating......cost?.....time?One thing's for sure, if it's gotta be flat, then subsequent labour charges to flatten it will put the cost the same as electroplating.Ian.
Reply:Just curious, If you put a bow (tie the ends together) in it prior to dipping wouldn't hat prevent warpage in all other planes, except the bow. Then get the bow out by rolling or heat. I wonder if the finish would crack?Just a thought, never done it.
