A buddy asked me to fill and redrill a whole an aluminum backplate which got to wide. This backplate mounts on a set of takes and is used for diving. The mounting wholes are in a middle of a plate ? Which filler wire would work best for this application ? It's about 3/16 think. This is the product http://www.halcyon.net/bc/backplateLast edited by zglozman; 11-18-2012 at 04:56 AM.
Reply:This is the product
Reply:I'd guess is a marine alloy like a 5XXX alloy, but I wouldn't rule out 6061 since most of the time the plate wouldn't be submerged in water. If it was a DiveRite plate vs Halcyon, I'd simply pick up the phone on Monday and get you the answer. I don't think I've got Halcyon's number any longer, but I'll try and look later today.Filler, 5356 would be my choice, but 4043 would also work. Backplate is most likely the typical 1/8" thick. Hole spacing between the bolt holes top to bottom on the plates are 11" on center if he has the model with two holes. Newer plates from many manufacturers have gone to a single top hole and a 1" long slot at the bottom so tiny variations in bolt spacings from tank set to tank set won't matter.Honestly oversized holes wouldn't really hurt, but I can understand why he'd simply want to fill them. The holes in my plate will accommodate 3/8" all thread if needed, though my personal tanks all use 5/16" threaded rod. Even with the holes a bit wallowed out thru use I still don't need to use the washers under my wingnuts. If I use the knurled knobs on mine instead of the wingnuts, even larger holes wouldn't matter.Any questions let me know, I'm very familiar with this system since I've been diving backplate and wings for almost 15 years..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks so much, I live in the cave country and can probably get the answer for the allow from the source. This backplate will take 104 tanks.
Reply:You down by Ginnie? I had 104's for a lot of years and got rid of them when I bought my rebreather. Don't really miss them one bit. Pretty much anything I could do with my 104's I could do with my 95's without all the extra weight. There was no way I could dive my 104's with a SS backplate. They were just too darn negative. Now mostly I dive my Nomad and sidemount 80's. My back doesn't deal with backmounted doubles all that well any more unless I'm boat diving. I still dive backmounted doubles on occasion, usually when I help out with tech classes.I did full cave with Rose in 98 IIRC and my favorite system has to be Peacock. If I can scrape up the funds I'd like to get back down to Peacock or Ginnie this winter..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:I know rose (. Small world. I dont dive breathers for a whole host of reasons. I actually quit cave divign for a while, since last year.  Where do u live now ? My shopp in norht west gainvesvile.
Reply:If you know Evelyn Dudas, I'm about an hour north of her shop, in Bucks County Pa. Even though she's not all that close, I usually get my tanks filled there since my dive buddy lives down that way.I got into rebreathers when I was looking to do more deep wreck stuff. Then I ended up with ear issues  where both wouldn't equalize evenly at the beginning of a dive, and put it aside and haven't really gone back. It took a while to figure out the problem and hopefully we've worked out those issues, but in the mean time I've been doing open circuit and lighter stuff then I did before. Between the ear issues and time/money, I haven't done anything down in cave country for a while. I've got another dive buddy who retired to the Crystal River area and he's been hammering me to come down so we can do some Cavern diving at either Peacock or Ginnie.Yeah it's a small world. I was on a trip in the keys and the guy I got buddied up with at random had done his Cavern class with Rose. I've known Pete Nawrocky for probably close to 15 years now. I do a couple demo's with every year with him, usually in sidemount since I've been doing sidemount off and on since I became full cave certified, and usually see Lamar and Lee Ann when they come up for Beneath the Sea in the spring to NJ..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
