Like the title says I recently finished welding class and will begin my first welding job on the 3rd.  I will be fabricating and Mig and Tig welding stainless steel pipe.  I need to purchase some tools and would like some help on what to bring to the job. Like I said its my first welding job so I'm clueless on what tools and stuff to bring and I'm worried about not being prepared.  Thanks
Reply:What ever you brought to school with you for a start. Dress appropriately. Most likely you will find out what other tools you will need shortly on your first day.
Reply:Don't go crazy and buy all tool you ''think'' that are usefull, don't buy 30 pairs of C-clamps if you don't need them.Think about your welding class and what tools have used, at my welding school tools were supplied, for my first day at work i had bought exactly the same set of tools.- 1-Clamp- Combination square 16'' (if you are working with rough steel like structural beam you don't need high quality like Starrett)- 1 Carpenter square (16'' X 24'' framing square)- Buying your own white chalk is stupid, every shop supplie them.- MIG plier can be usefull if you like them, a lot of people use long noose pliers. Also, a good thing to do is to buy a cheap pair of working leather gloves and a pair of safety glasses, normaly shops supplie them BUT keep in myind that the shop can be unorganized and they can forget to give you those safety stuff, so if you start at your shop ready to work so your foreman don't need to care about find you those item its better! And for the rest of the tool look what kind of job you'll be doing, and what the shop supplie and what's not, and start buying other tools after couple weeks.Calculator > Bevel Square
Reply:Vinnie,Dress like you're going to the beach, don't bring anything, and be sure to ask "when's break" and "when's lunch" at 10 minute intervals Seriously, Congrats on your new job.  Call your employer and ask them what to bring, maybe even go down there and talk to the guys in the shop, kinda shows initiative.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:Congratulations!  You are now to embark a new beginning.  Bring your confidence and the attitude of willingness to learn.
Reply:Congratulation too!!!!Bring long sleeve shirt, clean welding jacket if possible, your hood with clean outer shield, and a couple of pairs of gloves just in they don't have them. Also a cheap pair of safety glasses. That way at least you are dressed for success.Tools. Wait for them to advise you, and they should have tools to work with. The oldtimers always go out of their way to school you in tools. Then you can ease into it. Reply:Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful for a rookie.  One tool they did say I would need is a digital protractor.  I was looking around at the brand everyone had there and the cheapest I could find it  online was 300.  Can anyone recommend a cheap and decent one to at least get me started. Also for school I used a set of old used leathers.  I planed on buying a new set but I noticed everyone there was just wearing a "dickies style" work shirt with welding sleeves over the top.  Will I be ok with this setup?Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Make sure you check before purchasing.   I like Stabila digital levels and their regular levels.  Their prices have come down significantly in the last few years.  My stabila digital cost me around 250 but they are a lot cheaper now.   If you are doing a lot of small pipe and stainless chances are you will not need full leathers.  Cover up the skin though and be mindful that Chromium 6 is a big concern when welding and grinding chromium alloys.
Reply:Make sure that's the one you need.  And shop around.$200+ http://www.tooldex.com/product/MIT-9...FY-d4AodWy0A-g"USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:all good advice.  the best work envirnments are the ones where everyone gets along.  personally i would take shovelons advice and get info from the other welders if they are willing.  will make them feel good about helping a rookie and you will get to know them as well.  good lcuk and congrats on the new job.Everlast PowerTIG 185
Reply:What exactly is the job specifically? At you working at a pipeshop welding stainless steel pipe? If it is mig & tig, it wouldDefinately be within a building if you are using MIG, and if it is mig, then you would be either using Lincolns STT machine or Millers RMD machine for the root pass on roll welds, and tig on the position welds - or else all tig roots and arc welding the fill and cap.If it isn't a pipe shop you're in, then it's gotta be a mod yard or Union site.Guys do not just get out of welding school on their very first job jumping straight into welding stainless steel pipe of all things. Anyways, you can just look at welders and know which ones are greener than the incredible Hulk - they will most likely have all the tools there for you in the toolcrib, such as grinders and such. If you show up with brand new work boots, brand new welding gloves (with the exception of clean tig Welding gloves) if you have brand new never worked in coveralls, jacket, brand new helmet, hard hat and those green welding jackets I hate so much, if you look brand new, guys are going to think you're new and don't knowAnything and treat you as such. Also, if you look like you know what you're doing, you will get more opportunities46’ sae30047’ sa200 w/Wisconsin VF451’ shorthood56’ shorthood56’ shorthood68’ redface69 redface07’ ranger 305G13’ sae300Inconel/Hastelloy – SS – Duplex – Chrome/Carbon Tig – F3Downhand – STT/RMD – F3F4 – B Pressure

Perhaps he will need a "digital hammer" to adjust it.....Hobo
Reply:You're welcome And don't forget to ask;....."when's break?"....."when's lunch?"....."you guy's mind if I just watch?"BTW, Hobo's not a troll,  but he is so old that he forgot what a "digital protactor" is And to Layout Man, yea, here in the States when an apprentice shows up with out of the package stuff, they get treated differently.  At least wear what you wore to school regarding PPE and helmet.  Like I mentioned earlier, go a day or two early, get a feel for the place and meet some of the guys.  Don't go in acting like you own the place though.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
