Mrs.zap has been after me to make one of these for about a year now...New tray for the birdcage bottom..Plastic one is falling apart..Material is .060 Aluminum sheet..Welder set at around 80 amps wide open..(I finally had to take it off "Kill")..3/32 Red End..1/16" 4043 Filler..NO burn thru..Been a looooooong time since I did anything this thin.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Hey Zap,Why such a loooooong time doing some thin material? Doing that thin stuff keep you on your toes & in practice for "finesse" welding. Reply:Hmmm, looks too plain.I know, engine-turn aka 'jewel' it all! j/kAlso, bird poop is rather 'corrosive'. Even to aluminum. So unless you are pretty good with the newpaper layer on top of the tray and not letting 'goo' get down to the aluminum, I'd think some thin stainle$$ would have been a better long-term material choice.And wait just a minute! I see a 'bobble' in the weld path! First pic, bottom right corner of the tray. Zap -is- human after all, and not a multi-axis CNC welding cell. (again, j/k ) The best laid schemes ... Reply:A little powder coating would provide some good protection.
Reply:The best protection from bird poop would be a thin layer o fiberglass resin. $8 at Home Depot. Just mix then brush it on.
