I've been reading these forums for a while now trying to pick up as much as I could. I just got my new HH140 and some goodies to go along with it.Here's my very first beads ever! Never welded a day in my life. All critiques and advice certainly welcomed...First beads.. cleaned up a bit with a brush.Another shot...And a shot of my little corner of the world. The tool chest I'm using as a temporary welding table was pulled out farther while welding. I just moved it in a bit for the pics. All the posts here have been very helpful in getting me a basic understanding of what I need to know. Thank you all!~TodLast edited by subzero; 02-10-2010 at 04:03 PM.
Reply:For your first time thats really good! Now I can't tell for sure from the pictures, but it kinda looks like the lower leg of the weld is longer than the back leg of the weld. You'll want to try and keep the legs even. Also looks like your work piece was getting too hot. When you run multi pass welds, heat will build up and start making your passes slump. Now lets see you stick two pieces together. Or make a verticle weld.

Reply:Thanks Grimm!Maybe a trailer hitch will be next Here's a few more.First vertical up...Definitely gouged it a bit.More vertical... (the welds on the right)And a closeup...Joining 2 pieces...And a closeup...Man, that vertical is hard. Oh well...gives me that much more reason to burn wire  Last edited by subzero; 02-10-2010 at 06:47 PM.TodHH140HF 4x6 band saw (cut straight right outta the box!)"-Of all the things I've lost... Reply:Looks like you're ready to build that boat trailer.I wouldn't weld on that tool chest, you can blow a hole through it real quick.Or set the paint on fire.
Reply:Just get a pice of 1/4" steel for the top so you have a Flat surface to work on. You need to get comfortable.Make sure you are dragging the gun with Fluxcore.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:Vertical is tricky. That's why I suggested you try it. Try picking up the travel speed a little on the vertical. It's looking a little lumpy. Or try a weave. But still, good work.
Reply:Man you are going to burnup that nice tool box, be careful
Reply:There are a few DVD’s on mig & flux core welding you may find helpful and some web sites.http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/w...atchallpartialLast edited by transit; 02-11-2010 at 11:36 AM.
Reply:Thanks for all the help and advice guys! Just fyi...I'm not actually welding on top of the tool box. I'm just using the rails to clamp some angle to, letting it hang off the edge. I'm hoping to start on my welding table this weekend. Thanks again. It really is appreciated!Now...off to practice some more vertical.P.S. Transit - Thanks for the link. I just ordered the GMAW DVD. Looks like it got pretty good reviews. Looking forward to checking it out.Last edited by subzero; 02-11-2010 at 11:49 AM.TodHH140HF 4x6 band saw (cut straight right outta the box!)"-Of all the things I've lost... I miss my mind the most."
Reply:GMAW and Flux Core share many of the same techniques but there are some differences too. Also keep in mind that not all wires in the same class weld the same, different recipes.
