I am wanting to build a davit crane that swivels and have the boom telescope out up to 10 feet. I want to mount the crane in back of truck, or on tongue of my trailer. I'll be using it to lift 10 to 12 foot logs of firewood.Just wondering if there are plans or designs, or ideas out there, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel Thinking about using a small electric winch for the cable or possibly hand crank? not sure what gauge steel tubing to use. logs will be at the most 300 lbs.
Reply:I think that the 10 foot reach makes it a big deal, and probably impractically large and heavy. So I would forget any dreams of a 10 foot reach. If you want something more modest, but still more than adequate for firewood, look at the Spritzlift design. http://www.spitzlift.com/RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:300lbs at 10' will require at least a 3000 lb cap crane. The crane though is probably the easy part, it's the support gear under it that will need to be even stouter, especially if you want to swing the crane. You might think instead about a beam and arch system ( don't know how else to describe it) for the trailer. Then back up to the log and hoist it up and place it on the trailer. They use the same idea to set burial vaults and septic tanks from trailers...No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
