Lightweight Boat Trailer Axle

Hey, new here but been reading for a while. Anyway, I'm taking an Agricultural Fabrication class through my Highschool this year and as a project I'm gonna be welding up a small trailer for a 12' boat I built with my dad last year. I've got a basic frame layed out and just need a little help deciding on where to get an axle from. My teacher has several small farm trailers out on the school farm he's built with mobile home axles and has offered to let me have one for cheap that would need to be shortened. I looked into them but it sounds like finding wheels is hard and they aren't reccommended for extended use but this is coming from a disscussion with huge yatchs and my boat probably weighs 250lbs. so....   For a small lightweight boat trailer were would you suggest sourcing an axle? I'm prepared to fit new lighter springs.Pete
Reply:Hello and welcome.Light weight axles or hubs and spindles can be found at Northern Tool among other places.  I'd probably opt for one of them vs trying to find a "used" axle unit myself. One reason would be that most trailer axles and hubs are designed or can be set up for immersion in water as opposed to say car axles or mobile home axles..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Dunno what state you are in but some states really frown on using mobile home axles. Reply:Thanks for the fast responses, this forum gets to work haha. I was thinking about the submersion factor and the mobile home axles were concerning me as i'll have to get it registered through our DMV which will probably be painfull enough. So it looks like I'll go the galvinized trailer axle route. Anouther thing is that is there any real advantage to square axles over round ones? And how easy is it to get the spindles to be in good alignment on the axles that need them welded on?

Reply:I'll assume since you are in SoCal, that you have to go through the same process as we do in NorCal.You will be suprised how easy it is. The DMV could care less about how the trailer is built and I have had them not even check for lights.
