A guy I work with put a lift and 35" tires on the jeep and was afraid the larger spare would start to put a lot of stress on the factory spare tire mount attached to the rear gate. So he asked if I could build him a bumper/tire carrier. This is my first bumper build and I feel it went fairly well. I drew everything up and it just rolled from there. The bumper is made from 1/4" plate ( I get a really really good deal on it here). How did I really do? Reply:Awesome rig all the way around and that bumper/tire carrier is extra awesome!
Reply:Nice! Hows the hinge setup for swinging the spare tire out?
Reply:Far a First Bumper build - great job. Dont have to be concerned about that one not holding up!
Reply:I would agree with the rest, first bumper build looks great!1/4" is pretty heavy tho, should last a loooong time! when I helped a few buddies weld pre runner bumpers in highschool it was all 3/16" max but if you say you get a good price and the buddy is happy then I don't see anything wrong with it as long as the mounts were built pretty solid.Last edited by barefooter14; 03-15-2011 at 12:19 AM.
Reply:Thanks guys, it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be, I think the tire weighs more than the bumpers. The tire carrier is built using a trailer spindle with a machined sleeve that houses races and bearings. There is a website that sells the kit for under $50. I guess you could google tire carrier hinge kit or something to find it.BrettUSAF SSgt - Explosives ExpertHobart Handler 187Hobart Airforce 4001989 Lincoln SA-200 Classic I

Reply:Originally Posted by little JeepI have a bumper & tire swing made from 3/16 tube stock that is basically the same hinge design as yours. Here is what I have found, after a few years of that large tire vibrating around from highway driving, etc.,, you start having stress cracks in the metal. If you off road the Jeep, or if you haul Jeep on a trailer, you have lots more vibration than normal. How guys have been solving this issue is by adding an additional support on the rail that the spare tire is mounted to that ties this rail into the tailgate of the Jeep. A common fix is brace (with hole for push pin) off bolts in tailgate, and a matching brace/tab (with hole for push pin) mounted to rail on tire swing. To open the tailgate, you will have to pull the push pin, and unhook the lower clasp on the tire swing. Here is a link to the spindle kit.http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm

Reply:That rockstomper is identical to the one I used on the build, except mine came from A to Z fabrication, it was much easier to buy the whole kit for under $50 than try to save $5 and piece/machine it together myself. I will be using them again if I can score another build for a bumper.BrettUSAF SSgt - Explosives ExpertHobart Handler 187Hobart Airforce 4001989 Lincoln SA-200 Classic I
Reply:Originally Posted by Big John!I had a rockstomper spindle when I had my Jeep and I just shimmed the rubber bump stops on the tail gate so that there was plenty of pressure on my tire carrier.  Since then, when I have used the rockstomper spindle, I've sleeved the bumper with 1.5" tube and then only welded the bottom of the spindle thus no heat at the fatigue point.  Has worked well so far.  I've gone to the Iron Pig spindle for the last couple I've done.  I'm actually going to start one for a 4runner next week using iron pig and am more than likely going to be figuring a way to make that dual shear as well.BTW...  Bumper looks good!

Reply:Hey I am new to this forum but have been welding a long time and am happy to find this forum. That tire carrier looks great!! Good job. It is cool to see so many in the industry that do their own fabrication. I own COMP4x4 and we make 4x4 fabrication parts. Dual shear tire carrier hinges, standard and heavy duty hinges, bumper brackets, etc and we are adding new stuff and launching a new site in about 2 weeks. I am starting to get on to a lot of other forums so I apologize if I am posting this info in the wrong spot. If there is a vendor area on this forum someone please let me know.We cater to the do it yourself fabricator. Check out our site at Comp4x4.com and/or stop by our booth in Moab over Jeep Safari and tell ROCK you want a free t-shirt. I'll hook you up.I think you guys will find our hinge designs unique and different from others. We use a sleeve that gets welded into the bumper so you don't have to weld directly on the spindle. (many benefits!) We have 3 new hinge and cap designs coming out that will be seen first in Moab during the Jeep Safari. Here is a direct link to the hinge page Let me know if you guys have any suggestions or would like to see a manufacturer make anything specific that is hard to source right now. This is our heavy duty dual shear hinge kit. Check out the new caps on our facebook page here
