I wanna build a goose neck trailer that is 24 feet long (19' with a 5' dove tail) with 2 7k pound axles but i dont know what i should use for the 2 main beems could someone help me with that
Reply:for starters, are you a good enough welder that you should be building such a heavy trailer? if you have not welded professionally, i do not recommend trying to build a gooseneck.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:I was going to build my own but I could buy one cheaper.Leo
Reply:A W12x19 would be pretty typical.Lots of toys.
Reply:yea I have welded proffessionally thank you very much just never a gooseneck trailer but i know i can weld one once i know what material i need to do it i just wanna make sure the matrial is strong enough
Reply:A nice gooseneck trailer would definitely be a challenging project. Fit up and fixturing will be interesting.Buying one is definitely a better option. We just bought a 37' with tandem duals with all the nice stuff. I'd hate to have to build one without dedicated jigs and fixtures. I'm sure there's no way I could do it for the purchase price. But if you're up for it....there are plans on the internet for goosenecks and just about any other type trailer. They are analyzed and stamped so the material and structure engineering is done. Once the safety items are in place you can customize to suit you. Probably be a good idea to spend a day at the trailer lots seeing what is involved and how each manufacturer/model is different. Reply:trucker, i wasn't trying to be mean or anything, there are just a lot of people that come on here wanting to build a large trailer as their first project.Dynasty 200DXPassport plus w/ spoolmate 100victor 315c oxy/(act and prop)Miller digital elitemilwaukee power tools
Reply:The main frame can be either I-beam, channel, or rectangular tube. The trick is in the details of the design. I admire this one from Broward Trailer. I have posted it here before. I think it has everything I would need in a boat trailer!  Attached ImagesCity of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:its all good turk .. i drive semi over the road and am own my own semi now so when i go home i like to putts around with projects .... i know every one says it would be cheaper to buy one but thats not the problem its i wanna do it to keep me busy on my days off this summer .... so once i know the warm days are here to stay i will start it cuz then i keep my semi outside and not worry about the cold weather gettin to her... i thank u all and if u have any ideas that would make this trailer stand out let me know i will work it in to it
Reply:The details will make it a good trailer.Spend time and effort on the lights/wiring. They are always a sore spot on factory trailers. Fixing them when snow is up to the frame is no fun. LED's seem the way to go. Cargo light be a nice touch. Dual landing gear with 2 speed gear drive is nice. I like flip over ramps with good springs and nice low angle approach. Ours has 3 on it but I don't see where I couldn't do well with 2.Spend money on flooring. If you go wood, maple or birch probably last forever. Might take forever to pay for it though. Pressure treated lumber at least.A lot of chain boxes/d-rings for tie downs. No matter how many you put on it won't be enough.Locking chain/binder rack . Boxes are OK until you gotta pull a rat nest of chain out. Plan how long you need it and add at least 10'. Good paint and primer. Galvanized or some type of corrosion resistant wheels. The white painted ones are junk.Good tires. St trailer tires."Custom Built By......." decals.   Looking forward to seeing your build. Reply:If you paln on doing it up right, and not cutting corners to save $$, then I would recommend recangular structural tubing over channel or even beam construction. Not only stronger, but looks cleaner too. my 2 cents
Reply:thanks for the ideas ... i really only a trailer for my two 4 wheelers i just bought ... get to pick them up next weekend if the dealer is right on when they are gonna come in but i thought if i gonna build a trailer i guess i gonna do it right and i will use it for a tax right off sure i will haul something for my semi with it :-) and yes u gotta have leds and cant go lite on them either and the rectangular tubing is a nice look to it i i was thinking and from what i have seen on looking around is for the main frame 10'' 15# I beam for the main frame and for the gooseneck then tubing on the rest
Reply:Since your in MN i would higly recommend against tubing.   Landoll down in kansas learned the hard way that tube steel was a bad idea when it came to building trailers.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:Around here most trailers that size use a base size of I beam of 12"x14# and upgrade to 12"x 19#Leo
Reply:I like C channel. Face them inboard and fit every cross beam with a notch on both flanges that closes the gap in the web. I think the joint has a name, which I would forget...City of L.A. Reply:tanglediver, thats has to be one of the most pimped out boat trailers I have ever seen. I would love to build that but the cost of materials would be in the thousands. Also would need the boat to go on it. It looks like the landing gear in the front uses pins only. Probably drops the legs and then dumps the air in the airbags on the semi that pulls that thing. Then drives away. I would but semi truck landing gear with the crank on that if it was me.

Reply:You need more hardened steel than most average i-beams to do this properly. You may be able to get away with less grades if enough support was added at the proper areas. Heavy duty trailers use AR450 grade steel. Anything over AR36 would be beneficial. Flux core wire would be your best bet. Chose the correct type of flux core wire for the steel application. Lots of research. Safety, strength, cost and design are just some of the obvious factors.Last edited by oxygen454; 03-22-2011 at 01:27 AM.
Reply:Looks like the boat trailer jack has a raise/lowering rod sticking out just behind the spare.  Could be a fold-back or removable handle, I can't tell from the picture.  I'm guessing the pins are so you only have to crank the jack just enough to release the pressure, then you can use the pins to put the jack foot up out of the way.  Beats twisting on the jack handle for 30 minutes.Edit: I just noticed those are dual wheels on the trailer.  Yeah, I'd hate to buy a set of tires on that, ouch.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
Reply:A gooseneck over 25' without a torque tube is useless to me personally and if i was to build a trailer it would be Beam with "pierced rail"  junior beam style crossmembersVantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
