Why do we have to put up with all this plastic crap?! I've broken two of these in the last couple months. How much more would it cost to use steel ones like in the old days? I got tired of it this morning, took a retaining spring out of an old school Jackson hood, cut it down to fit my Fibre-Metal. Reply:The answer to why is "economics."It is far less costly to make the part from plastics then to make it from metal and hence more profitable for the shareholders. There was a time in modern society when making products that were truely durable was profitable.  But with fantastic advances in the technologies of large scale manufacturing long-term durability has become less profitable.  If products last a very long time then consumers will not purchase replacements for many years and profits from large scale manufacturing becomers a flash-in-the-pan.  Greater profitability comes from repeat sales and repeat sales are not generated by products designed and manufactured for long-term durability.  So products today are designed and manufactured with a limited lifetime in mind.  That "limited lifetime" being the projected time that will pass before a newer technology will be perfected to replace the product currently being manufactured.- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.
Reply:Actually CEP, at first I thought you were going to go on a rant about plastic blister packaging. Now there's something worth getting upset about. Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:Nothing pisses me off more than having to re-spend money on a defective plastict piece.  I'm with CEP on this, they get a handsome price for the auto helments, can't they build them to last a bit longer.  I do not abuse my equipment or lay it on the sensors or dumb stuff like that, but geez Miller could you make the headgear last for more than a year or so.  It's getting expensive just keeping proper safety gear for me, let alone my helper and co-welder wife.  Just think 2x whenever you plunk down a dollar for gear.  It's steep and uneccessary.  Miller, are you paying attention?  Prolly not..(Rant Over).Wheelchair BobI'm spending my Kids inheritance, I dont like him that much anyway!!!!!!Enuff tools to do the job, enough sense to use em.Anybody got a spare set of kidneys?  Trade?

Reply:I think perhaps you need to do a redesign... find a better way or make a metal part yourself. For the record I have and use the same hood BUT I'm a hobbist so in comparison mine is brand new.Miller thunderbolt 250Decastar 135ERecovering tool-o-holic ESAB OAI have been interested or involved in Electrical, Fire Alarm, Auto, Marine, Welding, Electronics ETC to name a just a few. Reply:I had the plastic head gear bolts.  they are junk.  I called and reall had it out with them and they sent me 50 replacements.  I am on my last pair.  I will back to a huntsman if I can't resolve the head gear issue.  I hate it cause I have two nice tiger hoods from fibremetal.
