Can someone tell me more about this setup, and specifically if I should be doing something different like running flashback arrestors or check valves to be safe? Attached Images
Reply:I would run flashback arrestors at the regulators."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:What exactly should I run, something like this?http://www.buyweld.com/0656-0004.htmlI'm going to spend more on these flashback arrestors than what I picked up the entire setup for!
Reply:If you plan to do much heating or cutting, you'll want bigger cylinders. It won't take much to hit the withdrawl limit on what looks like a 10cf "MC" acet. cylinder. A  40cf "B" size cyl is borderline for light cutting, a 75 cf is better. That little 20 cf O2 will be empty almost in a blink cutting as well..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:DSW is correct with how fast you will be using that O2. I borrowed one that size from a friend when my O/A was stolen. I found it useful and easy to walk out the door with, but that was far out weighed by the cost to refill compared to bigger bottles. All you have to do is leave it on overnight and it's all gone. $40 bucks out the window cause that is what the LWS is going to hit you for. My wife called it the "Fisher Price O/A set". Costs me about $125 to fill my 200cf O2 bottle and my 75cf acetylene bottles. Absolutely worth every penny.Bill LambertArgon WeldingABQ NMSic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc
Reply:I've used these tanks some and its true they don't last long. The reason I asked the question is because I'm considering getting some larger tanks but want to make sure my setup is safe. I've actually had these for 6 years and only had to fill the tanks twice, shows how much I use O/A. Only time I have used them is when my plasma and 100 foot extension cord can't reach the job.Last edited by slagmatic; 03-03-2010 at 01:01 AM.

Reply:I have a set of those. They have been laying in the tool box for about 35 years now. Never seen a need for them. Something else to get people to spend more money. Burnt a set of hoses off the other day and all it did was make big fire. Arrestors wouldnt have made any difference there. We dont have them on any of our torches at work. Harold

Reply:No. My hoses went on the other torch at work. Both were within 15 feet of each other and I had some hot metal rolled over and burnt the othe hose off. Didnt have a thing to do with spark arresters.
Reply:I used to run both torch and regs. However last trip to LWS taught me that Smith torches mix in the tip which cuts down on the chance of a flashback. So i took them off the torch to reduce the restriction and left them on the regs thinking that if I burn the hose, still protected. I do believe alot of people will go without, I like to feel safe."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:So what order of events specifically causes flashback? Is it only when the hose is damaged by outside sources, like when the piece you just cut falls onto the hose? Or can it happen by misuse at the torch itself, like doing things in a wrong order or getting the torch too hot?
Reply:Anti flash back valves or check valves at the regulator end is very ideal to have,it would only take seconds to have an explosion with the right circumstances.hose damage or improper flame at torch end can cause a flash back/burn back inside the hose.Last edited by daman; 03-03-2010 at 08:49 PM.HOBART IronMan 230 MIGSmith Lifetime WH200 HD O/A Torch
