I am a woodworker by trade and have tried my hand at welding over the last few years. I love working with metal. I don't know what it is...the noise, the weight, the mess. Why do the sweat and filth give so much satisfaction after a project is complete? I geek out on the weldingweb quite a bit, looking for fun projects or tips on works in progress. Anyway, the wood shop I work for needed some large slider doors built to shelter a wood storage area. Up until now this small timber frame addition has been covered with tarps for over three years. We had a slow winter and the boss set me free to build some doors. I really couldn't find anything on this site, or anywhere else for that matter, that I could apply to my situation. Here is what I came up with. Don't rip too hard remember...I'm a woodworker! I thought I would post some pics. I purchased some cast iron v-groove wheels from King Arch and made the hardware. I used 1/4" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" angle iron and welded a 1" x 1" angle flipped upside down for the v-groove wheel to ride on. Bolted the 1/4" to the face of the timberframe and hoped for the best. For the side door, to access long boards, I made a spring loaded latch. I really had a great time designing this and I want to thank all you guys for your post and the inspiration! Attached Images
Reply:WOW. those are some nice doors man, could you post a close up pic of how you made your track. i like that design. looks all fancy and stuff. If you like my stuff you can find me on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/theangryanv...ngryanvilforge
Reply:Looks great! I would stain the wood a darker brown and paint the metal black. That would look sweet. Or even just the metal black. I like the true wood look. Clear lacquer would be nice on the wood.
Reply:great looking job , also looks like some nice scenery to boot.

Reply:NOMADMAD- I took another pic for you to get a better view of the track. It made me realize the wheels are riding a little out of plumb. Looks like with the nice weather I have a little more work to do (pro bono). Built these doors in the mid freeze of JanuaryO2- Thanks man. Think we might stain to match the rest of the building but I like the natural look of the ponderosa too.Swamp Rat- I like the name. I attached a couple photos from the mandatory ski the boss and I had this morning. That's the boss in the photo. I got to go first! Attached Images |
