My DH is new to pipe welding and has a welding test coming up.  He has had no issues passing BEND tests, but this will be an X-ray test. Are x-ray tests harder to pass?
Reply:Just make sure he watches his tie ins and stops, and keeps the slag out of the weld. The x-rays show defects within the weld in a way that a bend test cant do, so slag pockets and porosity must be ground/burned out
Reply:Xray tests essentially give you a view of whats going on inside your weld. Its kind of hit and miss at times, for instance sometimes you can get away with trapping a little bit of slag and she will still bend clean, whereas an xray would pick this up. Generally depending on the test you may be allowed a certain amount of weld discontinutities. Say 5 to 10%, but usually atleast in my particular field its always 100% xray. If he doesnt have issues with bend test i can just about garuntee he has clean welds. is this a tig test? if so watch out for tungsten inclusions, if you dip that tungsten once STOP grind out the area with an inclusion and continue.
Reply:He is a new combo welder, so he is tested on both TIG and stick on carbon steel & stainless pipe.  It's really hard getting/keeping a job when you're fresh out of school..
Reply:hell do fine! nothing to be afraid about regarding an xray its just another form of testing.
Reply:If he passes one he should have no issues with the other.
Reply:I wonder how they weld in outer space....you'd be welding upside down all the time virtually, except there was no gravity to keep the puddle in place......you could end up with a slag tunnel if you used stick.......pretty cool for alluminium with no O2 to cause oxidation.Ian.

Reply:RadioGraph Interpretation -  Click here to see What is Called in Xrays Now I believe that if you are good enough to complete a weld in a timely manner without trouble and can pass the bend test clean, then you will have absolutely no problem passing xrays.46’ sae30047’ sa200 w/Wisconsin VF451’ shorthood56’ shorthood56’ shorthood68’ redface69 redface07’ ranger 305G13’ sae300Inconel/Hastelloy – SS – Duplex – Chrome/Carbon Tig – F3Downhand – STT/RMD – F3F4 – B Pressure
Reply:i'd rather take an x ray test any day. you can get one little porosity bubble in a strap that might not be called on x ray, but that tiny bubble can ruin your day on a bend test.not to mention all that cutting and grinding, but most places do that for you these days
