About 1500 lb serious. The cone came from a rock crusher and is made of 1" nominal thickness cast iron 20" tall, 52" major o.d. 14" minor o.d.My customer "just wanted some legs welded on".After explaining pre mid and post heating that cast needs to be welded properly they saw the wisdom in making a cradle out of steel, instead.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Did you ask your client why they didn't get a big one?I hope it doesn't have to go up any stairs.Nice job on the cradle. As with all your work.
Reply:Sweet, My friend made one similar. The cone was a bit less narrow. He welded legs on it and a tube across the bottom to pick up the rest of the weight. He picked the cone up from the school he made it at with his front end loader and drove it through town to his farm LOL. Had some massive fires in it. Nice work.
Reply:That's gonna be a bad *** fire pit xD.Btw i dont think theyll need to bolt that thing in the ground
Reply:Looking forward to finished product.Great build. We are on our way to being farmers! Our site is always under construction so check back often for updates.  http://www.philosophyfarmstyle.com/
Reply:You always have such keen projects.  Talented well thought out solution here too.  I loved the owners thoughts on ~welding~ a few legs on it?We are not going to put a fireplace in the casita when we build it, rather put a big firepit on the patio outside... less spendy and fine for us.    Where might someone pick up an old rock crusher cone like that?  We would very much ike to see it installed and "fired up"  Boy howdy!Lincoln Power MIG 215Lincoln WeldPak 3200HDLincon ProCut 25Lincoln WeldanPower 225 AC/DCIf all else fails... buy more tools

Reply:That sure is a 'serious' firepit!I see the pic about rolling the hoop/ring, but how did you do the 'flat' ring?  Cut out a BIG circle, or somehow bent the flat bar into a flat ring? And the legs are going to get fully welded to the support ring, right?  Cause I only see all the tack welds in the pics so far.  1500+ pounds of hot cast iron cone with a few hundred pounds of  burning wood inside it doesn't seem like a good thing to just sit on some tack welds.  Waiting to see the follow-up pics.  Your design sense is usually pretty darn pleasing to the eye, and you workmanship usually looks pretty good too!  Oh, I think it needs some gussets.  Somewhere.  Just because.        The best laid schemes ... Reply:Looks like a fine job.The angle and proportion of the legs and support frame match the cone very well. You have a great eye for that and it's pleasing to see."One of the things we have to be thankful for is that we don't get as much government as we pay for." Reply:Brian:Really excellent work.Question. How did you calculate the angles for the splayed legs?Isn't the customer worried about someone stealing this? Glenn.Sign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

You put some artistic thought into it and turned out great! I agree, no one with out some serious lifting equipment is going to be able to steel that!

Reply:Originally Posted by app-ironworksllcIf it fit tight enough I was going to put 3 spacers in to raise it just a hair, but the fit is nowhere near tight enough to hold water. (My s***'s round, the cone isn't quite, I checked.)I did the same thing when he brought it here. Thanks this was a fun one, I'd love to have more of these to do.Both rings were bent (not rolled) with the Hossfeld. Here's their tooling page, http://www.hossfeldbender.com/toolin...angle-iron.phpFigure 10 shows the setup for "angle flange out" which also works well for flat bar "the easy way"Figure 11 shows the set up for bending flat stock edge ways or "the hard way".It really does a super job and on stuff up to about 1/4" x 2" you can get quite a small radius.Of course the legs were fully welded, I finished it up today. I also ran about 2" on 5" inside and outside the corner formed by the rings. Last I added some 1/2" bar loops for lifting with. All that's left to finish in the am is the grate.F*** a bunch extra gussets, if it was at all wobbly I'd add more stuff, but it's rock solid, so that's all folks.Well I don't bother posting pics of the crappy stuff. Feel free whenever you're around. I'll put on the coffee you bring the doughnuts.Dang you guys are impatient.Here.Attachment 65283Attachment 65284Attachment 65285Attachment 65286Attachment 65287
Reply:Originally Posted by roadkillbobbthat looks really nice..just a question...when that gets red hot from his giant fire will the angle iron legs bend from where they are welded from all the weight of the bowl?..would tying in the legs under the bowl offer more suport from the possibility of the legs just spreading out and the bowl hitting the ground. it seems theres going tobe one heck of a fire in that..
Reply:Originally Posted by app-ironworksllcThanks.First off the legs are tube not angle.Secondly, while I agree (in theory) that this pit may be able to get hot enough to soften the steel cradle I seriously doubt it will see those temps in the real world.Figure wood products start to burn around 450 degrees and up, of course the temps will climb from there as more fuel is added. That chunk of cast is going to be a huge heat sink, too. So the fire will have to burn a long long time at very high temps before it soaks up enough heat. Also since hot air rises it will draw a lot of that heat away from the legs.I thought about bending another ring edge ways to connect all the feet, but it's getting set on a concrete pad and if there's any concern he can anchor the feet.I'm sure if it did melt and fall I'd hear about it, so if it does I'll tell you. (Or you'll hear about it in the news after the campground catches fire and burns to the ground.)  "Doh!"
Reply:Well it is delivered and has passed it's 1st "stress test"The customer told me it was delivered last week and they already had a huge fire in it, and didn't burn down the campground. They also said that within 15 minutes of being fired up over 100 people from the campground showed up to check it out. Many of them asked where they could get one. They're supposed to send me "action" pics soon.I love it when a plan comes together.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
