Looking at buying a used Maxstar 150STL. They seem to be very simple, is there anything I should check before buying one (other than making sure it welds)? ThanksAirco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:It is a inverter machine, so if it comes with tig gear, and regular stick leads I would just give it a quick run through on both processes just to make sure ther's no board problems. I have one and love it! Good luck bud I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Thanks Mike, I will test it. It has tig gear but no stinger with it and no pedal. I don't really need it but for $500 it would be nice to have.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:I think the STL is a lift arc start so a pedal isnt needed, for $500 in good shape thats a good deal, Like they said, plug it in and make sure it works on 120 and 240v. I have the older 140 version and it is great to throw in the truck for quick work at the shack or jobsite.
Reply:Yea Pug,for 5 bills you better buy it. Even if you don't want it, I'm sure you could make a little on it to cover your time and expenses.Seems like the Invertecs had problems switching between inputs, but that would be one thing to check anyways.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
Reply:For all my pissing about inverters not running 6010 right, the Maxstar 150 runs 6011 fine. Reply:I want one of those Maxstar 150's too. They are sweet, yet OVERPRICED machines! Because the name "Miller" or "Lincoln" is on a machine, it's always 1/3 more the price of what the item should be. Finding a nice new one would be great. I guess the obvious thing to look at is it's overall condition. Does it look like it was dropped of the bed of a truck on the freeway at 70 mph? Does there seem to be a large accumulation of dirt and dust on the air vents? How's the conditon of the wire leads? Basically, does it look like the previous owner took care of the machine? Those are things I'd look at besided the obvious of what you said.....try it out. Try it on ALL sorts of settings with the potentiometer (low, med and high ranges). Bring your own electrodes and steel too. Try both 3/32 and 1/8" rods to get a good feel. That's just me, but before I buy a used piece of equipment, I always ask the seller if I can "test drive" it and really "kick the tires." Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if that model has a cooling fan or not. I'd put some 1/8" 7018's in it and crank up the heat to full power. Run it for a good length of rod or two to ensure the cooling fan actually comes on and works. IIRC, the older Maxstars didn't have a cooling fan. However, someone here probably knows for sure if that was the case or not. Good luck and let us know how your "test drive" went with that machine.Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller 625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:Thought I would up-date this thread, I didn't get the Maxstar for $500. But I got a new Maxstar 150STL for Christmas It welds great but I don't like the finger control. I was looking online and found SSC sells a pedal for the Maxstar. Does anyone know if they are as good as the Miller pedals? From what I've read they work well but would like to know for sure.Airco Ac/Dc 300 HeliwelderMillerMatic 200 (stolen)Miller Maxstar 150STLMiller AEAD200LE (welding and generating power) Hobart MIG
Reply:As good or better. SSC makes pedals for several welder manufacturers. I don't own one personally, but I've only heard good things about them.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps

Reply:The Maxstar 200 uses the 14 pin foot pedal. The Maxstar 150 uses a different pin connector..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size.
