A farmer friend needed to pump water from a spring to a house on a remote part of his farm, where there was no electricity supply, so I built this ram pump. It uses no electricity or fuel, being powered only by water. It pumps about 1000 liters (200 gallons) per day, to a tank about 30 meters (90 foot) vertically above the pump. Reply:how does that work?
Reply:Google for "hydraulic ram".  Mother Earth News must have some articles as they are big on this kind of stuffGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."

Reply:Jackjones,Very cool device!  I'd never heard of this before.  A friend of mine told me about another "flowing stream" type pump called a Trompe.  Sort of a stream powered gas lift pump...no moving parts at all.  And like you said, it's basically free power (as long as the stream doesn't run dry!).  Thanks for the post and the video.Miller 211 w/ spool gunMiller Dynasty 200DXLongevity 60i IGBT plasmaO/A w/ crappy chinese torch/gaugesSouth Bend 10K latheGrizzly 4029 10x54 millGrizzly 7x12 hor bandsawangle grnders, bench grnder, bench belt sndr7.5 hp 80gal cmprsor
Reply:I've always wanted to build one of these, but never found a spot on the property with enough fall and water volume. How did you build the poppet valve?  That always seemed like it would be the most difficult part to build.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE

Reply:Originally Posted by jackjonesAll you need is 6' of fall to get the pump working. If you don't have volume, let your water into a tank, and run the pump until the tank is empty.
Reply:I built one a couple of years ago and use it to supply a mountains cabin running water.  We don't drink the water from the creek.  Toilet and other house water only.  I also built a turbine which turns a GM 200 amp alternator.  This power is converted to AC and is sent back into the grid.  This actually pays for our electricity and enough left to pay the taxes.  The key to this is enough water and amount of fall.
