Anyone else ever had trouble tying your caps in uniformly or welding a butt joint due to a complete loss of vision of anything but the arc and puddle after striking an arc? Is it possible night blindness could be the cause? Just to eliminate some more common causes:- I changed my cover lens- Turned Shade all the way up to 12 and all the way down to 9- And I don't wear reading glassesAny feedback would be much appreciated.

Reply:If I run into an issue where the weld is flush with joint but still needs a cap sometimes I will take a grinder and set a small groove in the path I need to follow. As long as I can see the front burning into the groove, I know it is straight. I have gotten to the last pass on welding tests and thought I was going fine just to run off of the edge and flunk out.CERTIFICATIONS:7018M- H.V.O10718M- H.V.O11018M- H.V.O9N10- H.V.O71T-1-HYM- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0,035- H.O.V100S1 PULSE ARC 0.045- H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.035 H.O.VER70S-3 PULSE ARC 0.045 H.O.VER5554- H.O.V

Reply:That's why it's pretty important to not over fill your edge, just below the edge of the bevel, so you have something to follow. But I like to use my wafer wheel like folks said above and scribe a line all around if I have to.
Reply:I'm digging this thread up as I have a test  coming up soon. (no grinders) Any other thoughts?
Reply:Few things that may help...Fresh lenses in your hood for the test. I have also seen guys draw a line with soap stone 1/4" from the joint as a guide. Hope this helps Thermal Arc 210 FabricatorHypertherm PM 45and lots of other tools the wife doesn't know about

Reply:I run a Jackson EQC, its like welding in 3D, another option, get a hoodie and pull the hood up over the back of the helmet, another option, watch the toes of the previous weldI forgot how to change this.
Reply:I've got a shield specifically for taking welding test. It's a Jackson I believe. Maybe FiberMetal. It's been stowed away since I quit welding for a living. It's the non-flip 4" lens. The lens is #10 gold. I feel I can get a better look at the weld. The arc reflects light back onto the work with the gold lens. It helps me out a lot. I keep it clean and in an old backpack hanging up. I bought the setup bout 9 years ago and haven't replaced anything. I treat it like a newborn. Lol. For everything else welding I just use a cheap auto darkening shied. I can see well enough to make it right but not breaking the bank on gold tint lens. Thanks for reading!
Reply:I just use an old school flip top lid. Have the same one since high school. Never let me down.

Reply:Another good suggestion is to sharpen a 5p rod with a file to a point and use it as a pick. Sometimes you can pick out little pieces of slag that the brush misses. And it also helps finding bits of undercut. I also like to run a sharpen piece of soap stone on the sides of each pass. Brush it away afterwards. I tend take a lot of time inspecting my passes and planning the next. Something so small as too much cover or trapped slag could cost us a job. Thanks for reading!
