I need to join stainless and aluminum, and I have no idea how to do it or if it is even possible.  I do not have a TIG welder, but I was wondering if something like silver solder would work...?Thanks!

Reply:Explosives...same principle that join mild steel and aluminum...though I have not seen SS used.Classic 300D LN-25Plain Jane O/A
Reply:Sure you have if you've seen any all clad cookware.
Reply:I have used the mild steel to aluminum transition used in building boats. We used it to attach aluminum wheelhouses to steel hulls to keep the weight to a minimum up top. Very high dollar stuff back in the day. Other than 'how does it work' episodes, have not seen the all clad cookware up close. Would this type of joining work for AL/SS for transition strips? I believe they are encasing the SS with alum, or the other way around.Classic 300D LN-25Plain Jane O/A

Reply:I am building an ethanol still, and the dome on the top is a stainless mixing bowl. It needs to be sealed to the lid of the boil pot, so I thought it would be best if it was welded/soldered/brazed somehow. The cheaper the better.
Reply:I'm pretty sure that's not gonna be possible.

Reply:Easy if you have an oxy-acetylene torch.  It's a two-step process . . . first tin the stainless steel surface with a copper alloy.  It can be silicon bronze, manganese bronze or a silver solder.  Then join the copper surface to the aluminum with an aluminum brazing alloy.  www.Tinmantech.com has a very easy to use flux-core aluminum brazing rod.aero_braze_flux_coreDynasty 300DXSmith He/Ar gas mixerMM350PHobart Handler 120Smith LW7, MW5, AW1A
Reply:Mortal,I think it would be easier to find a boil pot made out of stainless.....Besides, drinking hooch distilled in aluminum or car radiators will make you go blind!!Oh, yea....this is for "ethanol".....Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....

Reply:Aluminum and stainless steels cannot be welded together in the typical welding process. They have very different melting temperatures and they do not mix to form an alloy. They may be bonded together other ways, like soldering and a bonding substrate. They can also be joined together with fasteners like rivets or screws.
