Customer brought me quite a mess to fix this AM..Round aluminum plate with a shaft thru it and some sort of apparatas on the backside..He tried to mig this and well...it did not work..All I did to separate the pieces was whack it once with a brass hammer..Ground down all the poop and re did what he did..I had to do both sides and there were 2 of these..When he came back to get them I told him "If you want more of this done DO NOT try it yourself..Just bring it to me"..He agreed and that was that.I get all the fun jobs.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I don't know what to say about the original weld, I'm speechless. However great job on your part, like usual.Gordhttp://gordsgarage.wordpress.com/
Reply:You would think that he should have given up after the first 1" or so of weld and just pit it down to i just can't do it.
Reply:The worst part of rediong that job is cleaning up after someone has already pooped on it
Reply:I would love to be able to hear what they say to themselves in their own mind while continuing to do such a great job. Then some stand back and think it will do for its purpose.
Reply:I'm a newb, but I've never seen a bead look like that. To my eye it looks like instead of one "spot" (for lack of better term.) laid on top of another like a stack of coins, it looks like they were overlapped about 10 degrees from side to side. if that makes any sense...Was that to make a wider bead without doing a double pass or something else?
Reply:lol looks like my first ever welds!syncrowave 180 sd
Reply:He did both of them like that ? what did it cost to un-do his work and what did it cost to weld ? was he using wrong wire/gas/not enough power ? just curious

Reply:On the 8th day the Lord gave Zap an interest in  welding and..................Perfect welds as always. Your work speaks for itself everytime, if everyone were as proficient at their trades as you are the world would be far less aggravating. Most importantly, one thing is for sure, you now have the best ad campaign running through the dudes head every time anything welding pops up. And your customer is paying for ad budget and distribution, and believe me , he will tell his friends he has the inside track to the cleanest welds in town.Mike

Reply:Thanks, gives me something more to google and learn Even as new as I am, I'm pretty certain I would have stopped after, oh, a good inch or two and realized it just wasn't right.

Reply:Good fix zap.....you get all the fun jobs I had a coworker bring me a set of alum ATV ramps a couple weeks ago. 3 of the rungs were broke and asked if I could fix it. I could see someone "welded" on them before so I start to grind out the bird poop. Well lo' and behold I start seeing sparks from the grinding  LOL someone (he wouldnt confess who) tried to stick them back together with steel.
Reply:Originally Posted by zapsterYup..Both sides..Both of them...Cost?That's not my department. But there was a whole lot of grinding involved and that made a bigger mess than the poop weld..Hard wheel on a 4.5" grinder with a LOT of wax.....zap!
Reply:Originally Posted by HertzSo did you actually walk the cup on that or just free hand weave? I've never been able to walk the cup on aluminum fillets. It's too, for lack of a better word, sticky to slide the cup.BTW looks good. obviously better than how you received it.
Reply:Originally Posted by SEARWell time is money, did you end up spending as much time welding as you did cleaning up that mess ? People understand more when it comes to their wallet and it must suck to see that on the bill "clean up mess you made- 1 hour"
Reply:Take note those that want to know if you can weld alum with their tiny 110v migs....That would be no. I've seen a bunch of so called alum mig welds that didn't look much better, all made with a small mig..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Gotta, say, leave it to Zap to show me things I didn't know existed.  Haven't seen much (any?) cup walking on aluminum before.  Nice work.Question for zap - did you keep your filler rod in the fillet, IE: "lay wire" when walking the cup, or did you use a dip and retract motion?  Just curious. PS - what kind of wax are you using for your aluminum tools, and where do you get it!  You've probably posted this before, so i apologize in advance for asking without proper research.  But I do really want to know because I need some o' that.I used a sait aluminum-specific 4.5" grinding wheel recently and, found it worked very well.  Mostly because it seemed to shed the grains quickly.  I would still like to know where to get that aluminum wax, because I need to take better care of my carbide burrs!

Reply:Originally Posted by jakeruThanks Zap, I just found and picked up some canning wax (it is "parowax" brand) at my local supermarket in the canning section.  I just did a little checking and it looks like Gulf wax and Parowax are the same thing: 100% paraffin.
Reply:So does that mean if you tell a brit to go weld with paraffin you are not wishing them a good day?
Reply:Castrol stick wax. Comes in a caulking like tube. We get it from MSC, but any machine tool supply will have something like it.  Long tube keeps fingers away from rotating blade. We use it on sanding discs, saw blade, etc.
