I didn't know exactly where to put this, so....... I don't mean to be crude. I don't mean to sound like I am an expert.I was driving the roll-off truck this morning, on my way to deliver a 10 yard dumpster. A couple blocks away from the shop I hit a fine hellinois pot hole, I look out my driver mirror only to see the dumpster hanging half off the side of the truck! I got it most of the way back on, and limped it back to the yard, VERY slowly. Luckily, it was not a very busy road and the box was empty. Anyway, the front roller, which is part of the retention, broke and therefore it came loose. It couldn't come off completely because of the cable, unless that would have snapped, but scared the crap out of me anyhow. I don't know who was the last person to weld on this box. It hasn't been welded on since I started there in April of 2012. But before I got there, any one of the $10.00/hr seasonal guys, would grab the worn out, rusty wire, Mac Tools mig welder, and start "welding" broken things. I estimate maybe 1/8" square. total area of actual weld holding it on. And that's from looking at the minimal shiny area.So when guys here get bashed for using their new 115V mig welder to build a trailer as their very first project, this is a good example of why they are getting treated like that."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:A buddy of mine hit one of those rollers that had fallen off a bin on the freeway here in Dallas .. . Not pretty - shattered his front left wheel on impact . . .Definitely not something you want falling off . . .- Tim

Reply:Are all made that way ?  Looks like it is a poor design for a stressful point. I would think they would have a bracket similar to what is on the other side of the roller.A piece of plate with a hole in it and welded to the rail.
Reply:Background checks, competency tests, and registration for anyone to own and operate any welding machine. Think of how many "could" have been killed. Someone send this up to Obama. All kidding aside, that's scary as hell man. I take it there is no way to track repairs on dumpsters? Might be a good system to implement, Inspect, repair, inspect finished repair, track repairs through paperwork (I know, ugh.) and hold workers accountable. If you cant fix it with a hammer, it must be an electrical problem."Boy, everyone starts with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience. Reply:Glad no one got hurt there Dean. Really scarey thing is I know someone who got a job one place welding up new commercial dumpsters with almost zero hours of experience running mig. All the shop really cared about was a warm body that could sort of squirt wire in the general direction and would work cheap. When we commented to her on her lack of skill and the fact she landed the job, she said that the boss told her not to worry too much, poor welds just got them more repair work... .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:WOW. I am far from an experienced weldor but that is near the top of my list of shoddy repair work Ive seen online. You are really lucky that the outcome wasn't worse. I use the highly revered HF 90A FC machine in my garage but obviously for nothing critical, not even within ten miles of something like that. Jeebus. You can always wash your hands.
Reply:But there is another slant on this that some people might take...You are the driver and you are responsible for everything that has to do with safety in the operation of that vehicle!  Didn't you do a thorough walk-around and visually inspect the truck and the cargo on it before leaving the yard??   You should have seen that defective weld during your pre-trip inspection!Too many drivers simply don't perform due diligence and inspect the vehicle and it's cargo and cargo securement before hopping into the seat and taking the wheel.  It is YOUR fault that the thing fell off the truck after you left the yard! Now then, how  do you like them apples??- MondoMember, AWSLincoln ProMIG 140Lincoln AC TombstoneCraftsman Lathe 12 x 24 c1935Atlas MFC Horizontal MillCraftsman Commercial Lathe 12 x 36 c1970- - - I'll just keep on keepin' on.

Reply:Just jam the wires in the outlet and ask the boss to hold them there while you do a few tacks... Hand him a hood while you are at it and tell him to ignore the sparks coming from the outlet, you shouldn't take too long to get it done. He'd probably be happy to get a plug then... .No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Originally Posted by Stick-manMaybe I should disassemble every wheel on the truck and inspect the bearings before each trip! After all, one could become worn without warning. Or maybe I should re-torque EVERY bolt on the truck EVERY morning. Because, after all once again, SOMETHING could come loose.  Are you F'n kidding me? I REALLY hope that was a joke. Do YOU inspect EVERY weld on your vehicles EVERY morning?
Reply:An accident is usually a chain of events, that by breaking any of the links it would not have happened.1. Pothole, poorly maintained roads?  Could have existed for a long time or opened up yesterday.  Was the highway well maintained or neglected.2.  Poor quality design, manufacture, inspection, maintenance and repair of the dumpster shown.  This seems to be self evident.3.  Driver's responsibility is to do a complete circle check on his vehicle and load before leaving.  The driver is like the captain of a ship, he is responsible for the safe operation and condition of his vehicle and it's load and if something happens he usually gets much of the blame. So Mondo has a point, If Stick-man performed a proper circle check inspection to the best of his ability and was unable to detect the cracked welds at the attachment point then it was beyond his control and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt."The reason we are here is that we are not all there"SA 200Idealarc TM 300 300MM 200MM 25130a SpoolgunPrecision Tig 375Invertec V350 ProSC-32 CS 12 Wire FeederOxweld/Purox O/AArcAirHypertherm Powermax 85LN25
