Reply:I make a decent wage, but I ain't getting rich by any measure. getting $29 per hour and $65 a day per diem on this job. I was making $34 and $90 on my last job, working 7-10s, I made 11k in one month.Rig welders are the ones 'making bank' these days.I don't ruin any clothes, you learn how to get out of the fire. Plus, nowadays they make you wear nomex coveralls, so you burn up their clothes.Last edited by TimmyTIG; 01-06-2013 at 10:41 PM.
Reply:I TIG but so far only because it interests me and need it for my own stuff.I did have a good deal lined up based on my aluminum welds being much better than what they were getting.  But when he saw my old school set-up he figured the other guy (with fancy new stuff) should be able to do better than he has been doing...Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.

Reply:I try to....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.I started tig welding at the beginning of last year.  I don't do a bunch of it, just cracked open my fifth 150 bottle of Argon.  Mainly, I use it for intercooler piping and butt joints on exhaust systems, mostly DC, as my panel is only 30 amp.-AaronJet 17.5" Drill Press1942 South Bend 16x84 Lathe1980s Miller 320A / BP --- 2013 Power Mig 2562012 Jet 7x12 Horizontal BandsawVictor O/A Setup

I travel around working in refineries, I live in an RV.That job was for JV Industrial, I guess they're a pretty big contractor in the refinery world. It was a shutdown in the Conoco Phillips refinery in Borger Texas. Those kinds of jobs don't generally last more than a month or so, then you have to find another one.I'm working for KBR now,  definitely NOT making 11k in a month here.

Reply:I tig pretty much all day every day. I'm a welder/pipefitter dealing mainly in stainless steel piping and tubing. Mainly food/water plants. I stay pretty clean as the plants are all food grade. I make 20 an hour paid hotels and 35 a day per diem. I am currently on a 3 month job in Denver at a new water bottle plant working 7-12's. should be around 12-13k plus when finished, probably 2500-3k worth of per diem if I save it. Money's nice but I enjoy doing it more than anything.
Reply:Haha! I TIG professionally, but don't make "bank", I make "ovens"...I like a few others am in non-union production fabrication. I don't get paid much, but it's enough and what I make I know I earn.
Reply:My main job at work is E&I tech, but I'm also the only welder in the plant. GTAW 2,3,4G AL,Carbon, SS,  SMAW 2,3,4G Carbon.  We have contractors come in for big jobs and I make repairs to equipment and do small project stuff. I have a friend who owns a body shop and I help him out when he needs something tig welded. Yesterday I tig'ed a quarter panel on a cadillac.

Reply:I got my first taste being taught by an older gent from GSFC.Was bit bad after that and soon found myself with an HTP 221. I don't do it for a living, but I have made decent pay helping friends (and later their buddies). The only time I've burnt up any gear recently would be from "being so close to the end" of a bead and getting too close with a shortening filler stub haha.I have singed a few glove tips from a hot tig cup too. Reply:Scratch-start tigger from way back!hehe I love saying "way back"!I'd been in the pipe shop for about a year using a new fangled XMT 304 when one of the other welders finally asked why I didn't use the "lift arc" so I asked him what the he## he was talking about. This guy was kind of a joker so I was always suspicious when he approached me with something like that. But anyway, he tried to explain the feature to me, I tried to explain that I knew he was full of bs and I wasn't falling for it.Well, I finally tried it and I'll be a sonofabuck if it didn't work!
