Thought I'd post a few pics of my welding bed I have been working on this last week. Still have quite a bit to do but at least the truck is drivable now. First I need to locate some pipe the right size so I can recess all the taillights on the rear, and also the license plate. I wanted to be able to use it in the meantime so I went ahead and flush mounted them temporarily. I also have a few unfinished welds and ALOT more flap-disk grinding to get done. Then I need to make a sump for my acetylene bottle and also cut out lead wells, etc. I'm getting a shiny new Vantage 400 this coming week to put on it so I'll try to post a pic or two when the welder is mounted and all work/paint is done on the bed. Thanks for Looking!Sixshooter
Reply:Looks nice, Sixshooter. You probably already know this, but here in TX, we are required to have mud flaps on duallys. I didn't know until I was getting an inspection on my dually pick up and the guy checked to make sure the flaps were there and weren't torn. When I asked, he said they're required.Just an FYI...
Reply:Yeah that is another thing on my list to do. I appreciate the reminder! I was tossing around the idea of making some kind of "stumpy" mudflaps out of steel and having them on a swinging hinge. They would never rip or tear as long as you set them up in a way that they wouldn't get in a bind when driving in ditches and such. I don't know...just a idea.
Reply:Good looking bed sixshooter.  Question for ya.  What did you use to frame up underneath the sheet metal ?
Reply:Very nice work!It is going to look great when painted.BTW I was curious about the steel box up against the back of the cab.Is that to hold two oxygen tanks?AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
Reply:Lincweld, I made the actual frame from 6" channel that was chopped down at the front so my welder sits lower. But to answer your question I ran 3" channel side to side layed down. I also put it on very close centers at the rear of the bed for support in my "work bench" area.

Reply:Wow, looks great, good job; keep the pictures coming.Working on cars and bikes is my hobby, learning to weld the pieces together is my quest.
Reply:Looks great! To get that done in a shop, it would cost you an arm and both legs! lolI like the formed sheet on top. Is that little access trap door to get to your fuel pump if ever needed to access it?
Reply:looks Great!  If you don't mind.  how many hours do you have in it?DayePound to fit, paint to match
Reply:Great looking bed on a great looking truck. What size exhaust tip is that?Oxygen454, I would guess the trap door is for a gooseneck ball. Can't wait to see the finished project.Cain's Mechanical LLC Southwick, MAwww.cainsmechanical.comRig:-2006 Chevy 2500 utility body-Lincoln Ranger 10-Miller Spectrum -Tons of hand and power toolsAWS D1.2 Structural Steel Certification
Reply:That Looks like a great project!!!!
Reply:that is really great work and design. i like the pipe tray built into the back lip of the bed. Love the lights too. Great work.Wishing that your steel bed was build around a set of 35x12.5-17 tires and 2" spacers. That way you have a wide footprint but tires not sticking out of the stock bed.
Reply:I swear there are more flat bed dodged than anything else.. Nice work.Adam MMorales Ranch
Reply:Oxygen454, that is indeed the access plate for my gooseneck ball. It is recessed about 5" or so. Tigmusky, I haven't really kept up with hours very well, wish I had. I would say if you added it all up it took around 5 full work days to get it where it's at currently. But like I said thats a rough guess. Wish I had kept up with my time. Oh well, next time!KB1ftx, that is a 7'' tip. Believe it or not it's just a old stainless fire extinguisher I had laying around and I thought it would make a good tip!I appreciate all the compliments guys!
Reply:That tail light arrangement is SICK!  looks like a spider's eyes and reverse lights for the teeth.  Maybe I'm just a nut though.

Reply:Very nice work on the bed, I'm jealous of your truck and more so your weather, I'm in the northeast, if we ran around more than a day with that it would be all rusty, summer or winter."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Nice what about some handrails-bed rails around the border of the bed about 10'' high square tubing or something. Don't take it the wrong way just throwing out some ideas. Very nice work.

Very nice work.Is the V groove at the back for holding pipe?  If so, that's genius, pure genius.  What about integrating holes for a pipe vise?I may incorporate some of these ideas in my flatbed F150 build.Edit: I have gone back and looked at some older posted welding beds and also see the V groove on the back.  My question stands as to it's use.Last edited by Fegenbush; 03-01-2011 at 10:13 AM.
Reply:Its not for just pipe. You can use it for just about anything, line up pipe and weld it, put long lengths of angle iron, square tubing, rods, etc. for cutting or welding.

Reply:Good to know.  Even though I'm not building an exclusively welding bed, but a standard flatbed, I will incorporate that feature into it.  Now, if I only had the time...
Reply:Beautiful bed Shooter! What size & thickness angle is the v trough made from?American by birth Southern by the Grace of God
Reply:Thank you 74Fencer, I made that out of 4x4x1/4 angle. I think most that you see are made of 3x3 but I wanted mine a little deeper. Here's a few crappy cell phone pics for a update. I just got the toolboxes finished this last week. Reply:I was originally going to use spools on this bed, but I decided against them. I like the simplicity of hangers and being able to remove my leads and lock them in the truck in under 10 seconds. Don't have to worry about being clean, overheating cable etc. Just works well for me. And my torch hose and regs are on the passenger side. I need to make a better wrap for that but hvent got around to it yet.   74fencer I had the steel lids broke at a local shop seeing as I don't own a brake. Thanks for the comments guys.Last edited by Sixshooter; 05-08-2011 at 04:32 PM.-1948 Short Hood SA-200-Millermatic 251-Hypertherm PM45-Victor Torches/Regs
