Has anyone built a traditional rocking chair, not one of the fancy artsy looking ones on the Miller site.  We have two wooden rockers that are starting to need replacing and I thought it would be a good project.  I could make my own just using the wooden ones as a pattern, but I thought I'd ask here first since there are some really good craftsmen on this site and I'm sure someone's had the idea before me.  Thanks Lincoln Pro Mig 180Everlast PowerARC 200
Reply:I made one out of scrap metal I had laying around. It was for my friends school project. Its not good by any means but it was kinda neat and fun to make.  I used rebar for the rockers, worked ok actually haha.Thats all I have sorry, not "good craftsman material" haha Attached ImagesHTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:I have repaired a few old chairs and made some smaller parts for them, but never tried to make a new one. I do know that the best way to make the curved parts is to start with good wood and steam bend it. Can't recommend the best type or where to get it; I tend to scrounge or start with logs and thick branches when doing my little woodwork.Made a new shovel handle out of Juniperus conferta which a neighbor had to pull out; it has some pink and some orange wood  showing on different sides. Made a new axe handle out of Blue Gum (Eucalyptus) 'cause it will never break! Have sat on hundred-year old Redwood stumps, and put a new springboard in another taller one, just for a picture...which I can no longer find.
Reply:I have built several out of horseshoes. Using the wooden ones as a pattern is a good idea. Rounding the back will make them more comfortable. To make the rockers if you use 3/4'' pipe you can bend it on a wooden jig. To make it cut a2''x10'' board to about 36'' long. Then cut 3'' x7'' rectangle from both ends. This gives you a place to clamp it to a table. Then cut a curve (ark) in the 30'' between clamp pads. Use some 1/8''x 1'' flat to hold pipe on one end, pull pipe down to ark and cut to lenth. You now have one rocker. If you have any questions PM me.    Greg

Reply:Thanks for the replys, I probably should have been more clear.  I would like to make one out of metal, like square tubing for the frame and flat iron or expanded metal for the seat and back.  I've got some ideas of my own I might try.  I'll keep you posted.Lincoln Pro Mig 180Everlast PowerARC 200
