Not sure if this qualifies as a welding project but here goes anyways. I've been kicking around ideas for another little car build and couldn't decide what. Then I remembered the old 1:8? (about a foot long) model a friend gave me many years ago. It's in pretty rough shape. I'm planning to make a metal frame, suspension, engine, rims, leather/wood interior and lots of other dress up parts. First off I spent an evening cleaning/oiling/greasing the 3 in 1 and mounted a 4' florescent above it. Then picked up a 6" rotary table (which I'd been wanting for a while). Yesterday I got busy drilling spoke holes around the beginning of a wheel rim 48 (2 rows of 24). The spokes are pins I was playing with... a center hub is next. Amazing thing was that I didn't break a single drill doing it. I'm a rookie at the machine work (part of the reason I tackled this) so am open to suggestions. Here's the pics.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Made some progress with the wheel. This one will become the spare and was a trial run for me, now I gotta start the other 4. I'm pleased considering this is a first attempt at a spoked wheel. For size reference, that is an Ipod touch in the last pic.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Here is the latest. got the hubs carved out and drilled, now on to the rim. So far I've drilled one....3 more to go, centre bit first then finish them up with a regular bit. Here are some better pics.If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:That is a cool and fun looking project.  Keep the pictures upMechanical Engineer

Reply:Those spoked wheels would be the show stopper for me.  I'd be lucky to get one done in a life time.."The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt
Reply:Wow SW that's pretty cool!!! If I may ask, what is the details on your combo machine???? looks bigger and sturdier than others I've seen. Size? Speeds? Bed length and swing over? Are parts easy to find.Thanks!!!!200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Thanks Bert, the 3 in 1 is a "Force" brand (sold by now bankrupt House of Tools). The lathe is 16" X 19" and works well for most of what I do. The mill has some issues with rigidity when you work it harder. There are seperate 3/4 hp motors. IIRC it weighs around 700-800 lbs. I haven't had to replace any parts but this same machine is sold under 3-4 different colors and brands. The parts should be available through them. Tooling is standard stuff, 1/2" cutter, tooling is easy to find (but expensive!). Thread cutting capabilities, but haven't mastered that yet. 3 in 1's are handy for small spaces, but I'd prefer seperate machines. Nice to be able to set each one up without tearing down the other. There are lotsa of helpful upgrades on the net that improve capabilities. I'll snap a few pics of the speed charts. Geared lathe drive and belts for the mill/drill. You thinking of getting one?If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Got bored with drilling the holes in the wheels so I moved on to the frame. It's badly busted up with most of the front end missing (including the front axle). The missing pieces will be rebuilt from reference pics. BTW, my brother in law just started working at a place that builds oil drilling rigs. He asked if he could pick up some scrap for my hobby, "anything you can carry, you can have" was the response. I'm gonna end up with a great collection of material, the pins were cut undersize and couldn't be used, some sort of drill steel I suspect. Same as the 3" solid standing behind.  :kewl: Here's the pics:If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Besides getting a bunch of yard work looked after, I squeezed in a bit of time to do this. On the original RR there are frame stiffening rods that run down the bottom sides of the frame. First pic is the posts that the rod runs through (ever drilled a hole in a coat hanger before?). I don't have the gear to weld this so I have to admit I used JB weld. Next pic is the beginning of the front leaf springs and the last pic is the shackles. This could turn into a long project. For those that like this stuff here is a link to an incredible 1:8 frame from a true artist. I use his pics for reference.http://www.jrhscalecars.com/RRChassisPhotos.htmlIf you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:A little more progress, still needs final pit and clean up. Most of the shaping was hand filing, even the little dremel removed too much too quick. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:Do you have a tig machine or micro torch? There seems to be a pattern with your projects being smaller and more complex than the average jungle gym. City of L.A. Reply:Don't have a TIG, but was planning to try the micro torch...thanks for the reminder. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
