welding car spindles for trailer axle

Anyone have advice for using 1970 vintage chevy car front spindles for a trailer axle?are they cast steel?cast iron?is preheat necessary or better?is 7018 the right rod?thanks in advance for your help.Sidlincoln sa200 redfacehobart handler 140dodge 3500 duallycatalina 22 sailboat89' jeep cherokee 4x4
Reply:My advice is not to do it. You can pick up a pair of new stub axles for that purpose for $20 if you shop around.  It really isn't worth the effort or the risk to modify something else.My name's not Jim....
Reply:Having done a lot of axels from car spindles, my advice would be DON'T.The labor involved to do it right is triple what is involved in using the cheap available axles made for the purpose, and the failure potential is high.  You're dealing with an unknown metal in car axles, and when a failure happens it will be catastrophic.Factor in that you haven't any idea what rod to use and failure is almost guaranteed.
