I got a call to fix a broken tractor steering knuckle. Here are a couple pictures I took when I went to look at the job.https://picasaweb.google.com/highpla...roken_tractor#There is a cast iron knuckle that slides down over a splined shaft. The splines on the shaft are gone and the splines in the knuckle are gone. Somebody has come along and welded around the top trying to weld the splined shaft to the cast iron knuckle, but it broke shortly thereafter......which, after looking at the repair, I was not suprised of.The way I was thinking about fixing this was to remove the cast iron knuckle, and weld two pieces of plate about 1/2 wide and about 3/8 thick to the existing shaft, then cut two 'keyways' into the knuckle so that it would slide back down over these two pieces that I welded on.Does that make sense? Do you think it would hold? Any better ideas? the owner does not want to replace the parts because they are very very expensive.Any advice is appreciated.Miller 302GMIller 12RC SuitecaseMIller 30A spoolgunHF-251D-1WP17 Tig torchSmith HD torchHypertherm 45Jet drill pressHF 7X12 wet cut horizontal band sawPlasmacam CNC table

Reply:One of two ways comes to mind. Drill a perpendicular hole thru both and use a good size roll pin, or drill down parallell to the shaft and knuckle so there's a half hole in each 180°opposite one another......Mike
Reply:Take the knuckle off and let's see the bore and shaft. Was there originally a keeper bolt down the center?
Reply:I've seen a lot of these. Personally I don't think that anything short of a tapered fit that pulls tight is going to hold. Especially on a industrial tractor with loader which you have there. I did fix some on a farm tractor once. It was a big job where I took the spindles out. Built them up, turned a taper, and then cut a keyway. I then turned the same taper on the arms and cut a keyway in them. I won't do it again for the same tractor (a International which are known for the weak front end) since I know you can buy new ones cheaper than what I did. You're problem is that being a industrial John Deere parts are not as available. The farm tractor axle has a lot more options for parts. I just checked. The farm tractor spindles are running about $200 and the arms are about $80. But they don't have the industrial version.   Hmm. Ok Looked at the pics some more. You've got the weight bolted to the front and the cylinder mounted on the arm. That means you've got the heavy front end loader and backhoe package on that tractor. Those take some real mean abuse.   If the owner insists jury rigging it then a slight modification of your plan is the only thing I can think of that wouldn't cost more than new. The main things I'd change in your plan is I think I'd work on 3 keys welded on and have them tapered so that you can pull the arm down tight on them. That might last a little while (it won't be permanent) but will be tricky to implement.   I don't know your capabilities but talk about cutting keyways so I assume you have a means of machining them. I would cut the keyways in the arm on a taper like I mentioned. Precise spacing of the keyways wouldn't be needed. In fact you might stagger them intentionally to keep them in the beefier parts of the arm. Say two on the arm side and one opposite. The reason for 3 keyways is that way you have three point contact to prevent rocking.   After that you make the keys and use the arm as a jig to hold the keys on the shaft in the proper place. You can weld the top of them with the arm on there so that they're in the right place. You can then remove the arm and finish welding the keys.   Of course after you do all of that and charge what it's worth you're going to be awfully close to the price of new parts.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
