Im using my Miller Econotig to learn cup walkin. My buddy a really good proffesional tig and pipe welder said just practice on carbon paper until everything looks uniform. I've done thatNow that im praticing in the joint its not working out the way i want. I know it takes patience but I want to see how other people learned.I'm going to do the thing that God put Galen Beasley on this Earth to do:Have Salon quality hair and weld.Nothing like a good cup of coffee and the smell of 6010 burning in the morning. 971-204-3444 cell API ASME Structural NDT and Repair

Reply:When you are tig welding in a V groove, cup size is really important. Relax your torch hand and it will be easier. Experiment with cup size. If you have some heavy will pipe or plate, it will be easier as well.UA Local 598

Reply:Get a piece of masking tape and put it on the table or wall or something and try walking on that with your torch, u'll be able to see the movement your doing pressed into the tape. Hope that made sense but that's how I practiced.
Reply:its all practice when you do some thing40 hrs a week you will get good at it
Reply:An instructor at school, way back when, compared it to moving a 55 gal. drum. Same walking motion. What would Mr. Miyagi do???200amp Air Liquide MIG, Hypertherm Plasma, Harris torches, Optrel helmet, Makita angle grinders, Pre-China Delta chop saw and belt sander, Miller leathers, shop made jigs etc, North- welders backpack.
Reply:Why on earth would you try to learn on paper or tape? There's so much more to walking the cup then just making it wiggle back and fourth consistently. You need to be able to keep a consistent arc length and torch angle along with a few other things.Just get some scrap and start doing it, and you will actually be able to see what you need to do differently rather than guess from marks on paper.Have we all gone mad?

Reply:actually I learned with a piece of sidewalk chalk the same diameter as a tig cup. There's a little more to it than just the motion but that goes a long way. the other big thing is picking a cup the right size and getting your stick out just right so your heat is going where you want it to. use one of the methods to get your motion consistent then practice bead on plate. You don't have to do it on pipe first. once you can get a consistent bead switch over to pipe. In all honesty though I generally only cup walk on the cover pass and maybe the last few fill passes. it doesn't get me very far on the root or beginning fill passes.Welding EngineerCertified Scrap Producer
Reply:I usually have to hold between the gas knob and where the tightener for the tungsten is, almost like you are holding some scissors in a sense, I also keep slack in the gas line to take off some weight for more free movement but at the end of the day it's what's comfortable, puts out a good weld and practice, practice, practice.
Reply:Sorry for the dumb question but what exactly is walking the cup?
Reply:when the cup touches the pipe and you go from side to side of the weld wheni did it for Rolls Royce i did it evey dayhavent done it in 10 years and it wouldtake at least a week to get back into it(40hrs) its all practice Attached ImagesLast edited by ed mac; 05-04-2010 at 09:24 PM.
