hi, i need to fill some gaps in some stainless panels and was wondering if they made stainless flux core wire. don't want to get gas and stainless wire because its a small job. if it is made where can i get it?thank you
Reply:they do make it but i never seen it in a small roll i think it only in 1/16 and bigger and in 45 # spoolsLincoln Power Arc 4000 Thermal Arc Fabricator 252 iThermal arc 186Thermal Arc 26 tigTweeko 200 amp spool gunHobart AirForce 400WP-17V-12R
Reply:Yep, it is being made. There's even some on Ebay in 20# spools but it's expensive for a small job.Can you use Solarflux? Thanks,HoboLincoln SA200's... at least 15 - 20. They come and go. Growing partial to the "Short Hoods" in my old age. Last count on Short Hoods was 13 in possession.
Reply:not really familiar with that product but i looked one their site and it looks like its made to be put on the back of a weld to protect it.

Reply:its about 16ga sheet. its paneling on the wall of my restaurant.theres also other little misc. things that i need to weld/repair. little thicker but not by much.
Reply:Trust me, get the tri mix gas it will save you many headaches.
Reply:such as what?to do this i will have to buy a bottle/gas which i think will end up being more expensive.

Reply:sorry i'm still a little new to welding. why would TIG be best for this? i know TIG would always be the best weld but this isn't going to be structural at all and will not even be seen, thats why i was asking about mig wire.
Reply:I found this stuff today.  Anybody ever used it?  Seems like a good option for the occasional stainless job.http://toolsandmore.us/us-forge-1187...FQeynQod2XEAmgIt is US Forge ER308-FCO.HTP Invertig 201 w/coolerLincoln Pro-MIG 175Lincoln Squarewave 300 TIGMM251
Reply:If no one will ever see it - why not use SMAW instead? Here is a link on info for Lincoln rods.http://www.lincolnelectric.com/asset...9L-17/c656.pdfTractor supply has 1/2 pound pack of rods for $10.  My local place does too.http://www.tractorsupply.com/hobart-...k-of-5-3895527Dave J.Last edited by MinnesotaDave; 01-31-2013 at 07:07 PM.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:stick welding sheet metal is beyond my capabilities and is an exercise in frustration.  Some can do it and do it well but i would guess most cannot.  That is why this wire seems as an interesting alternative.HTP Invertig 201 w/coolerLincoln Pro-MIG 175Lincoln Squarewave 300 TIGMM251

Reply:Howdy! I make commercial restaurant equipment and I think you are looking at 18 or 20 gauge, but it might be 16. Even so try the flux core. I don't think your question required so much debate regarding process. Yes they make flux cored 308 wire as you've found but you pretty much always have to order it as nobody stocks it. The machine you have is set up for flux cored wire feed, not TIG or stick, so yeah. Get the wire and try it. It burns pretty much exactly like er61t-10, likes to follow gravity so anything overhead is going to drop a lot of cherries on you. Uphill it will want to booger up on you so avoid moving straight line or using cursive lowercase "e"s, instead stack arrows moving uphill for vertical welds. If you want it to look semi clean use some spatter shield paste on both sides of you weld. Good luck and share the results!
Reply:No experience with stainless, but using fluxcore on 16ga steel, while hard (you have to move quickly), I think it definitely possible with practice. Excellent penetration , but any thinner and you really do have to be expert.XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:great find. thank you. i'm also welding 18ga sheet for use in areas of my restaurant but gas is too excessive for my needs and stick is def. out of the question. but damn 1lb for $45 haha. i might give it a shot though, haven't found anything else anyway.
Reply:I'm surprised no one has mentioned this, but if this panel you want to weld is mounted to a wooden wall you will want to remove it before welding. Wouldn't want to weld it up, only to set the wall on fire behind it where you can't get to it to put it out. I know restaurants have stainless panels mounted to walls for sanitary reasons. Just sayin.
Reply:that should be a given haha.
