So a guy is soliciting all over Craigslist for someone to build him this carriage, and I'm starting to think its either too expensive for him to take it to the pros or he just don't care who he lines up that welds aluminum from what his ad says. Lol.Is this a common build for anyone of y'all out there? Only thing I can think of due to just getting started isn't much but when does wall thickness -vs- strength become to much for this guy to haul? It looks like he's got a few seats on there, full load looks exhausting. It must pay good. Reply:The build isnt hard , just need to be familiar with pipe work . If he moved the hitch as close as possible to the rear tire it will take the extra weight from the front passenger off the hitch as much as possible and shift it to the rear tire. Should pull easy - the weight is distributed on the tires and with a shiftable bike he can start off in low gear then shift to a comfortable gear. Now stopping may be a big issue if need to stop quick. Might be a good opportunity to look into.
Reply:I am showing some interest but know nothing about pipe diameter & wall thickness. Common sense tells me the strength comes from diameter size & wall thickness? Using channel or angle would be much heavier in the end, right?I make eyeglasses by Day N let the sparks fly at Night...Miller digital eliteDiversion 165Millermatic 211 w/spool gunSpectrum 375Buildpro 1/2 table w/fixtures08 F250 Powerstroke
Reply:Surely it would be quite expensive to fabricate a one-off cart. Especially without plans. The guy is probably experienced shop pricing and wants somebody who will not charge design fee.Design(jigs, fixture, cart), bending, welding, finishing, delivery, liabilityWorth a shot, just beware of all involved. Especially worth it if the guy wants more in the future.
Reply:Everything I've read about aluminum bicycle frames talks about post weld heating for stress relief. Where are you going to find an oven that big?I'm guessing a custom bike builder, using chromoly steel would charge $12k or more for this.zip
Reply:Considering the Florida terrain ( ________ ), something like those 'lil bar hoppers would do good There's quite a few here in PDX, most are made with chromoly, not aluminum. I've even seen some made with steel EMT.Regarding strength, angle and channel wouldn't cut it due to the weight required to achieve equivalent build strength. The strength with tubing comes as much from project design as dia. and wall thickness.Search around the web, there's quite a few examples.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....
