My dad's neighbors place is for sale and the lookers keep coming up his driveway. So he says how about a "forest svc" gate. I took a little liberty with the design. It will be two 10'- 6" gates for a total opening of 20' +.Top is 3" sch  40 ucp, the rest is 2" sch 40 ucp. The posts are 6" x 3/16 wall odt.Now I have to get him some good hinges and a solar operator package, and talk him out of the white powdercoat for some black or bronze.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Really nice project.  Fun to do somethin' for old Dad, ain't it?(Retired) Professional firefighter, amateur everything else I try to do...Oh yeah:  Go Big Red!   (You know: one of the 12 members of the Big 10 cuz we left the 10 members of the Big 12...)
Reply:Looks sweet. I was going to say 3" is overkill but that fits well the gate design. Clean it up and paint it, its going to look great. Will be watching, post pics
Reply:Well I finally got most of it done. All that's left is to weld the hinges on the gates then send it off for blast and powder coat. I'll leave the post side of the hinges loose till after the posts are set then weld them up on site so I can adjust height if need be.I wonder if 21'-8" clear opening will be enough to fit his Ford Ranger through? He wanted it big, he got it big.I cant wait to see it coated and installed, should be pretty nice. Here's what I call the "forest service" style lock box. Makes cutting the lock almost impossible. Suspects would have to cut the gate instead.I added the smaller posts because I'm just a little nervous about the 3/16" wall thickness of the 6" o.d. Tube. If i was ordering material I'd go thicker, but this was thrown together from leftovers.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Looks very nice!
Reply:Those outrigger posts add to the design, I think.  Makes it look more cool.  Gate looks great.  Can't wait to see some installed pics.

Reply:do you think that your support post are long enough?  for heavy gates like this I use at least half of what is out of the ground in the ground.  I also weld a round plate on the bottom of the post with a drainage hole cut in it.  This plate helps to keep the post from leaning over time.  Cheap addition to something you dont want to go anywhere.www.burdettenetworks.com

Reply:Made a little progress this weekend. I didn't get any good shots of the finished project because is was 12:25am Sunday morning when I finished, and I had a date with my daughter to make pancakes to get home to. Ugh! Since the operators are solar powered I had to use loop detectors because they draw less power than photo eyes. I hate digging ditches. Even with a trencher on the back of a MF 135 it was still hard work. Not to mention temps in the mid 90's. Ugh!!!I threw this light duty jib boom together Wednesday night right before I left to do the install. (Pops lives about 2 hours away from me.) Man it made hanging the gates a breeze. From drag out to gates hung was just over 2 hours.Gettin' there. Here's the best shot I could get with my crappy phone.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:awesome work Appalachia!  The burger sounds good.  Never had one built like that.  What puts you into Yuengling?  Spend some time in PA in a prior life?
Reply:I alway enjoy seeing your pics. You are not only an excellent fabricator, you are an artist.

Please post some kinda link to the King hinges if ya can?  That would be keen. Dad is a lucky Dad, my girls don't weld or fabricate well. Reply:Here's the hinges I used. They don't list the capacity online, but in the print catalog they're listed as 600 lb per pair.http://www.kingmetals.com/default.as...emcode=44-2003Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:I fully support the American Beer theory, although I do enjoy some imports from time to time.  Up until about a year ago, Yeungling or Yeungling Light was the drink of choice to keep in the fridge.  Then I made a contact that gets me cases of Yard's Brewing for the same price as Yeungling.  Since I can stop by and pick it up direct from the brewery, occasionally get a chance to talk to the owner and know that it was brewed the same week, I had to make the change.
Reply:Nice job, it looks really cool
