Reply:Balikpapan, eh?Never been to Kalimantan, but I love Indonesia. Very interesting country, with a lot of potential. And some great food, too. I once travelled by minibus across half of Java to eat ayam goreng in a town that was reputed to have the best in the world. It was pretty good, too.I have traveled in Java, Sumatra, and, of course, Bali. Indonesian metalworkers always have to do a lot with a little, as there are not fully stocked welding supply stores in every town. The very interesting book "The Complete Modern Blacksmith"was written by Weygers when he was living in indonesia, (he was born on Java) and wanted to carve wood- no carving tools were available, so he built a forge and metal shop from scrap, to make his own tools.

Reply:You did an excellent job. My father used to be a welding foreman at a shipyard in the Great Lakes so I saw many a boat being built and launched. He would have been most impressed with your work.  I've seen a few ice breakers built but I don't think you ever get to build one do you?I always marvel at the craftsmanship of boat builders. Nothing is square so fitting them up is a true artform. Doing it with the limitations you have there is a true testament to your skill.....Great job.Last edited by Stampeder; 05-06-2008 at 11:29 AM.Reason: added textSign on East Texas payphone: Calls to God 40 cents......it's a local call...

Reply:Nice Tug.The last Ship Selby Boat Yard (North Yorshire, England) built was 1 of 2 of the largest tugs in the world (approx 20 yrs ago) the boatyard was on the River Ouse and too narrow to launch Bow first, so they were launched Port side into the river. What the people that came to see the many boats been launched was if you stood at the other side of the river you were going to get VERY wet  Later on both tugs, under went sea trials off Hull, up river in the Humber Estuary (East Yorkshire, England) The Pilot testing the engines demolished a large Pier, in one fell swoop, smashing 12" square timbers like match sticks Needless to say the Tug was untouched
Reply:Nice work and looks like fun. All I have ever done to boats is patch holes in them. I've never been in a shipyard but know a few guys who work in them here and they tell me they use a lot of flux cored wire now.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.Impressive work!!!! The pics of the smaller boats are Great Lake fishing boats(just in case you didn't know). We have a few operating locally here, but not as many as you would think. I had a regular at the local bar that worked on one almost throughout the year on Lake Superior. If the ice was thin enough they were out. He said they pretty seaworthy enough to make ya hurl!!!Growing up In Florida and sailing with my father we knew a sailor that would pilot an owner's boat across to the Bahamas for a fee. The main reason was pirates and owner's preferred that. Seems in the South Pacific waters have gotten so bad the take the whole freighters now.DanMy instructor said someone will catch on fire during class...He wasn't joking!!

Reply:Originally Posted by 76GMC1500How much you make?  A boat that size?  Guess around 30,000 gallons at $2.50 a gallon for red dye diesel.  That would certainly be a years wages for most of us, if not more. The offshore anchor handling boat we are rebuilding at my work is underfueld at 90,000 gallons.  When you plan a trip on a tug, the safe assumption to make is 1 gallon of fuel per horsepower per day.  Our 5,000 horsepower boat at that rate would only run for 18 days.  That hardly gets you to Hawaii from California at 6 knots.
Reply:An LCT is a great idea for putting what you want wherever you want. Feel free to post internal photos!
