Not sure if this is the right section so if it's not I apologize. My father wants me to build a coolant expansion tank for his show car, so of course I said no problem. After doing some research, it seems no one makes then for his type of car, so I decided that I will probably make them for some cash on the side. While designing the tank, I found weld on billet filler necks that look like this:After thinking about it more and more, I would really like to make these tanks to accept the stock tank cap, and give the person the option of either using the above, or using the stock cap. The only company I can find that has the weld on fill neck I need is Canton racing, however, it seems they don't sell just the neck.. The neck I'm talking about is the one attached to the tank in the pic below:This is the type of cap I'm talking about, it's on most if not all new edge cars. I have googled the crap out of it with no luck.. I have yet to email canton which I will do today to see if they sell it, but do not list it on their site. I do not have the resources to make it myself or else it would be a non issue.  But that brings up my next question, if I were to go buy a mini-lathe, could I make this on that lathe, and if so, how would I go about making the threads?www.thefusionsolution.com

Reply:Yeah, I checked them out also, nothing.  waiting for a response from Canton. If I can make it on a mini lathe somehow, I could use it as an excuse to justify that purchase. lol!www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:I believe the thread for that style is M48X3. You might be able to find a metric pipe adapter from an industrial supplier.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"

Reply:The only thing I was able to find was a test adapter in plastic. We had some adapters made from aluminium that converted from the threaded to a standard rad cap.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:That cap is the same thing that is on a Ski Doo sled that is water cooled with a heat exchanger..It's not all that big...I used to have one.Maybe you could get a plastic tank from a Ski Doo dealer and work with that.....zap!Last edited by zapster; 06-17-2011 at 06:41 PM.I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I would be kind of surprised to find a metal thread that matched the plastic cap threads.  The plastic caps I have looked at seem to have really coarse fat rounded threads that don't look like the metal threads I am familiar with.Miller Syncrowave 350Millermatic 252/ 30A spoolgunMiller Bobcat 225g w/ 3545 spoolgunLincoln PowerArc4000Lincoln 175 Mig  Lincoln 135 Mig Everlast 250EX TigCentury ac/dc 230 amp stickVictor O/AHypertherm 1000 plasma

Reply:Thanks for the help guys, Canton got back to me (right before they closed...) they said they sell them separate, but I need to call for the price.. gee thanks, you couldn't email me SOONER! I'll call them monday to get the price. I'm also going to look into ways to make my own.www.thefusionsolution.com
Reply:Have you thought about just having a small shop make you a batch.  If you knew the thread size it looks like a piece of cake.  Start with a long piece of pipe.  Thread an inch, part it off, thread an inch, part it off....My name's not Jim....

Reply:I live in the middle of nowhere and have 3 shops that can do internal & external threads. External threads are usually way cheaper and once the lathe is set they go real fast.Millermatic 200Hobart Handler 120Victor O/A & Ramco BandsawLincoln 225 ACSnapOn AD HoodMiller XMT304/22AHypertherm Powermax 1650 G3Lincoln Idealarc DC600 w/Extreme 12 VSMiller Digital Elite "Joker"
Reply:I live in NJ, nothing is cheap or easy.. (well, except the women.. and they are just easy..)  Unless I'm ordering 50+ a shop wouldn't do it. I don't need that many, I'm not sure I even need more then one right now.. it depends on how many people want one of these. if it's just a handful, then having a shop turn out a couple wouldn't be worth it. I would like a mini lathe so I can turn a step into the AN fittings for better fit and welding, so if I can turn one of these out on a min, I could justify the cost of one.. I wish my friends father was still alive.. he had all the shipment, all I would have to do would be pay for the materials, he would set me up with the other stuff I needed..www.thefusionsolution.com
