I need some help I have a Ideal are DC-250 that I got about a month ago and I can mig weld easy but the welder came with a Tig Systematics ck 150 flex and I got a new tip and some welding rod and gas but I dont know how to connect the tig torch to the machine can some one help me and tell me how to do it so I can get to practicing? Thanks Scott.
Reply:Can someone please help me?
Reply:If that machine has a polarity switch set it to straight polarity, if not, switch the leads so the stinger is on the straight (-) polarity lug. Cut the bottom out of a pop bottle (to use as an insulator) and slide it on the tig hose with the neck towards the torch.  Attach a power lug to the tig hose, then your argon hose to the lug.  Other end of argon hose attaches to flow meter or flow regulator on argon bottle.  Clamp the stinger to the lug, slide the pop bottle down over the lug/stinger to insulate it, turn argon bottle on, set flow at about 20 cu. ft. an hour and you're ready to go."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:WeldingLikecrazy, an Idealarc 250 is a constant current machine.  How are you mig welding?"The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:I have a lincoln Ln7 wire feeder with a mangnum tourch. I got it all for 600 bucks from my dads freind.
Reply:You're not welding.  You're making sparks. You need to do a lot more reading/study to find out what you have and what it's capable of doing.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Oka Idk how you Know that cause I have built grade a frames for 9 custom frames for 1948 -1933. I not you averege welder dude I no what im doing when it comes to mig. Tig I Know nothing about other then what to do to practice. Reply:Here is a ok pic of how to set-up a tig torch on a CC DC powersource (like your Idealarc 250) most important you need the TIG torch power adapter, but your local welding supply store will have these if they are worth a crap, lol. Here's a link of the power adapters, just like the pic, one side has the argon in fitting, the otherside has the TIg torch fitting, and you can just clamp your stinger to the flat piece. But you do need a torch with a valve since your machine doesn't have a solenoid.http://store.cyberweld.com/wetigtopoad.htmlLast edited by SR20steve; 06-07-2010 at 11:00 PM.

Reply:Wow thanks man that is exactly what I need got it all set up and allready made a bead on two peices of 3/16 flat bar. Thanks alot.  Originally Posted by SR20steveHere is a ok pic of how to set-up a tig torch on a CC DC powersource (like your Idealarc 250) most important you need the TIG torch power adapter, but your local welding supply store will have these if they are worth a crap, lol. Here's a link of the power adapters, just like the pic, one side has the argon in fitting, the otherside has the TIg torch fitting, and you can just clamp your stinger to the flat piece. Reply:No im just a 17 year old kid that likes working on hot rods and doing welding for people so he can make money to build his first car. And gets no respect cause his age and not noing a whole lot. Originally Posted by Bob the WelderBy WeldingLikecrazy:Why am I thinking of Elmer Fudd?
Reply:WeldingLikecrazy, I just went through a similar experience on the Miller board with a youngster and his total lack of regard for proper grammar and spelling. It was pointed out to him by myself and others about the importance of well expressed thoughts and correct spelling.  You do not need to be an English major when you post on these boards, but it shouldn't take any effort by others to decipher what you are saying.  I'm not a whiz at spelling but using Mozilla Firefox gives me a heads up on misspelled words and the correct way to spell them.  Takes very little effort, and makes a huge difference in one's ability to understand what idea is being conveyed. The person mentioned on the Miller boards was stubborn and defiant about his postings but did come around in the end.  I received a couple of PM's from him and he was quite cordial and respectful.  I hope for the same for you."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:Originally Posted by William McCormick JrI have used spool guns on ARC welders, and you just set the wire speed for the amperage range you want to weld in. They worked very nicely. I use a spool gun on a portable Miller Bobcat.        Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:I am very willing to admit that constant current has me a bit baffled. There is no such thing actually. No matter what you do because of ohms law, unless you get into pulse systems. But other then that nothing will keep current constant. The amperage is set by wire speed. The voltage sets the gap to some extent, then you have to either increase or decrease the wire speed to keep it from hitting the work or burning back into the torch. That will set your amps. You can put your amps up to 225 amps and run small 0.030 wire with a spool gun. Unless you are feeding a lot of wire, and I mean a lot of wire, you will never draw that much amperage. A spool gun is not different then a MIG machine. Same polarity. Originally on MIG machines, you set both voltage and amps, and with the suitcase, the wire speed. But the actual amperage was 95 percent set by wire speed, and the rest by voltage, you could dial the amps up or down and it made little difference. That is how the spool guns work off a TIG or ARC welder, it matters more how fast you are feeding wire. You are adjusting both volts and amps, when you change either volts or amps. I have yet to have anyone show me conclusively what constant current actually means to a specific welding machine.  On the spool guns for ARC welders there is a choke that does limit spikes, but inside a MIG Welder you will probably find similar equipment.        Sincerely,             William McCormick
Reply:From Wikipedia:Welding machines are usually classified as constant current (CC) or constant voltage (CV); a constant current machine varies its output voltage to maintain a steady current while a constant voltage machine will fluctuate its output current to maintain a set voltage. Shielded metal arc welding will use a constant current source and gas metal arc welding and flux-cored arc welding typically use constant voltage sources but constant current is also possible with a voltage sensing wire feeder. The nature of the CV machine is required by gas metal arc welding and flux-cored arc welding because the welder is not able to control the arc length manually. If a welder attempted to use a CV machine to weld with shielded metal arc welding the small fluctuations in the arc distance would cause wide fluctuations in the machine's output. With a CC machine the welder can count on a fixed number of amps reaching the material to be welded regardless of the arc distance but too much distance will cause poor welding."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
