Need an answer!

Could somebody please answer this for me..I love welding with 7018 rods..but i have no oven for them so i just leave them in a warm place in the house.For most heavy general work I use 6013s..i make alot of  gym equipment and want to use 7018s more often..So my question..Can 7018s still be used for general work even if they are not kept in an oven..Yes there low hydrogen but even if they absorb some moisture from not being in an oven are they still stronger then a new 6013..?or does moisture in the air completly destroy a 7018 rod and make them worthless..Ivan

Reply:So are 7018s that have been kept out in the atmosphere and not stored in an oven still stronger than a fresh 6013?Does anyone here work with 7018s on a daily basis BUT  dosnt store them in an oven?

Reply:So 7018s are still prefectly usable when not kept in an oven...except if the work is to coded standard??

Reply:Uncooked 7018's that have absorbed moisture will throw porosity in the weld because of the moisture in the rod.  Anybody can pass a bend test with wet 7018's just as long as they have a pack of grinding discs and burr bits handy.  As far as the strength goes, as long as the weld is sound the strength is their.  Stick them in your house oven before welding.
Reply:I've used 7018 without an oven to keep it warm most of my welding life. Moisture isn't a big problem here in the desert, but even after several days of rain/snow/moisture or how ever you want to call it, I stick the rod to the metal and heat the rod up  cooking the moisture out, then complete my welds. No they aren't code welds. Reply:There's always the old red-neck rod oven to consider, an old fridge with a light bulb in it.REAL TRUCKS DON'T HAVE SPARK PLUGS
Reply:We use them every day without a oven. Open a fresh can and place them in a rod holder with a ''o''ring seal. Never had problems.
