Here is a coffee table that I built. 47" x 23" x 27". Everything was TIG welded and coloration was kept from the welds to show some character. I bought 1 1/2" square tubing and built the frame. Found some big sheets of 1/8" thick 47" x 45" cold rolled steel in the scrap yard. Paid about $22 for them (I was very fortunate, like finding gold). Spent a couple hours buffing all the metal. Cut 4"x4" squares from cold rolled sheets and beveled them to look like tiles. I cut the top piece and fully welded to the frame. I almost sanded the welds smooth but decided to keep them because it looks more unique IMO. Next, I heated the tiles to my liking and laid them on the table surface. How I made them stay without disturbing the color is a secret. Shot some automotive clear coat paint over the entire table. It changed the color of the tiles a little but they still look good. Ordered custom cut piece of glass which ended up being the most expensive piece. 4 hole were drilled in the glass to sit on 4 tabs that I welded to the corners of the table. All in all it was a lot of work but was also a great learning experience. Plus, it looks pretty good in the family room  Attached Images

Reply:Good looking table, I would hate to stubb a toe though. When any government, or any church for that matter, undertakes to say to its subjects, "This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know," the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives.
Reply:great looking table for sure! Althought I think the gap between the tiles would make for an uneven/unstable surface when trying to set things down(?)Hobart Handler 125 #500495Miller Diversion 165 #907005 (tig learning box)
